Job summary

Airwallex in Singapore is seeking a Staff Data Scientist to shape the technical direction of our Payments Optimization team. This IC role focuses on designing and implementing advanced algorithms to improve payments performance and product adoption at scale.

You will partner with Product, Engineering, Risk, and Commercial teams, own experimentation and causal inference techniques, and mentor junior data scientists.

Qualifications

• Advanced degree (PhD or MS) in Statistics, Engineering, Computer Science, Economics, or related fields.
• 5+ years of industry data science or applied ML experience.
• Experience with experimentation and causal inference to drive product decisions.
• Experience deploying ML systems to production is highly desirable.
• Strong leadership potential and ability to influence product strategy.
• Proficient in SQL and Python/R.
• Experience using LLMs/AI to improve processes and models.

Responsibilities

• Define and drive the technical strategy for multi-objective payments optimization (conversion, fraud risk, costs).
• Serve as technical owner on cross-functional initiatives with broad business impact.
• Provide thought leadership on optimization algorithms and experimentation techniques.
• Collaborate with engineering to build tools and infrastructure for scalable optimization and production ML deployment.
• Partner with Product, Engineering, Risk, and other teams to influence strategy and investment decisions.
• Communicate complex data insights and recommendations to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Mentor and coach junior data scientists and engineers.
