Job Description:

What’s the role

Global Fuel Oil is part of Products Trading and is responsible for trading fuel oil, feedstocks and bitumen. The global team comprises approximately 25 traders across the major trading hubs of Singapore, Rotterdam and Houston, with an additional presence in Canada.

Based in Singapore, you will join a local team of four traders and four analysts and work closely with the bunker sales team. The business has a significant physical footprint in Singapore, including more than 1 million cbm of storage capacity, and is a major participant in fuel oil blending and bunker supply.

What you’ll be doing

As Senior Fuel Oil Trader, you will develop and execute proprietary paper trading strategies focused on HSFO while also contributing to physical trading, blending and commercial growth. You will be expected to convert market insight into well‑structured risk, manage positions with discipline and build relationships that create sustainable trading opportunities.

This role is suited to an experienced fuel oil trader with a credible paper trading record, strong knowledge of Asian markets and the drive to originate new opportunities rather than only manage an established book.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop and implement profitable proprietary paper strategies based on rigorous market analysis, clear trade construction and defined risk parameters
  • Manage paper positions with discipline, including position sizing, entry and exit logic, downside assessment, stop or review levels and active adaptation as market information changes
  • Use appropriate paper instruments to express and manage views across cracks, time spreads, inter-product and inter-regional relationships, outright exposure and physical‑paper optionality
  • Work closely with analysts to strengthen supply‑and‑demand analysis, test trading hypotheses and develop differentiated signals and strategies
  • Support physical trading across cargoes, blending, storage and bunker outlets, including the management of exposures arising from physical and paper positions
  • Identify and develop new customers, counterparties, markets and commercial routes, with personal ownership for building relationships and converting them into profitable opportunities
  • Contribute clear market views and trade recommendations to the team, including the thesis, timing, risk‑reward, key uncertainties and conditions that would invalidate the view
  • Collaborate effectively with operations, risk, finance, credit, legal, compliance and other support functions to execute business safely and efficiently
  • Operate consistently with Shell Business Principles and the Trading Code of Conduct
What you bring

We are looking for candidates with a minimum offive years’ experience in the fuel oil market, including at least three years in a trading role. The ideal candidate demonstrates practical paper execution capability and a strong understanding of physical fuel oil markets. Experience in Asian markets and an established regional network are strongly preferred.

Required skills and experience:

  • Demonstrated trading experience in fuel oil, with a relevant track record in paper execution and proprietary strategy development
  • Deep knowledge of Asian fuel oil markets, including HSFO, regional flows, customer segments, bunker markets and the interaction between physical fundamentals and paper structure
  • Strong understanding of global fuel oil and broader oil flows, refinery economics, blending economics and arbitrage relationships
  • Ability to explain and evidence a disciplined trading process: thesis formation, instrument selection, position sizing, risk‑reward, invalidation criteria and response to adverse market moves
  • Sound risk appetite and judgment, with the ability to take meaningful but controlled risk within an agreed mandate
  • Established market relationships in Asia, together with the energy and persistence to develop new relationships and commercial opportunities from the ground up
  • Strong analytical and numerical capability, with the ability to turn multiple market inputs into timely trading decisions
  • Clear, concise communication of market views and risk, both within the trading team and with senior stakeholders and support functions
  • Self‑driven, resilient and accountable, while contributing constructively as a team player in a diverse and international environment
What success looks like
  • A repeatable and disciplined paper trading process that produces profitable strategies while protecting downside
  • High‑quality integration of physical market intelligence, analysis and paper execution
  • New and strengthened market relationships that expand the team’s opportunity set
  • Clear ownership of risk, transparent communication and effective collaboration across the wider business
