Job summary

Airwallex, a global payments and financial platform, is seeking a Staff Engineer for the Cards team in Singapore. You will lead the architecture and development of backend systems and drive cross-team technical initiatives to scale our card products internationally.

You will mentor engineers, shape long-term engineering strategy, and ensure security, observability, and reliability at scale while collaborating with product, design and infrastructure to deliver impactful solutions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in CS, software engineering, or related field.
• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with leadership.
• Proven experience architecting and scaling backend systems and APIs.
• Strong CS fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, distributed systems.
• Expertise in at least one backend language (Java/Kotlin/Go/Python).
• Deep understanding of REST API design and Spring Boot.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP) and Kubernetes.
• Commitment to code quality, reliability, and performance.

Responsibilities

• Drive architecture, design, and evolution of complex backend systems for the Cards product.
• Lead cross-functional technical initiatives and align with long-term engineering goals.
• Own full lifecycle of backend services—from idea to design, implementation, testing, deployment, and maintenance.
• Guide teams in scalable, secure, and high-performing system design decisions.
• Establish engineering best practices around observability, testing, and API design.
• Mentor and support the growth of engineers across the team.
• Collaborate closely with product, design, and infrastructure teams to deliver reliable and impactful solutions.
