The National University of Singapore seeks a proactive Research Engineer to support hardware development and field deployment of a modular construction robot. You will bridge lab prototypes and real-world sites, ensuring robust, reliable, and well-tested robotic systems.

The role emphasizes hands-on prototyping, field trials, and hardware integration, with opportunities to design fixtures and test rigs using CAD and additive manufacturing.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields.
  • Strong hands-on prototyping skills and experience building electro-mechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with Ubuntu Linux, basic ROS/ROS2 commands, and hardware-level communication protocols (CAN, RS232).

Responsibilities

  • Assist mechanical assembly, wiring, and hardware troubleshooting of mobile bases, manipulators, and customized end-effectors.
  • Conduct sensor calibration (LiDAR, RGB-D cameras) and maintain hardware health of the robot fleet.
  • Support field trials and laboratory tests, including logistics preparation and safety compliance.
  • Collect, log, and analyze hardware performance and productivity data during field tests.
  • Design and fabricate mounting brackets and testing rigs using CAD (SolidWorks/AutoCAD) and 3D printing/machining.
