Job summary

National University of Singapore is seeking a proactive Research Engineer to support hardware development and field deployment of a modular construction robot, bridging lab prototypes with on-site testing. The role emphasizes robust, reliable systems, hands-on prototyping, and collaboration with lab and field teams to ensure safe, successful field trials and data‑driven improvements.

Candidates will work with CAD tools, ROS, Ubuntu, and hardware interfaces in real-world construction environments.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields.
  • Hands-on prototyping skills and experience building electro‑mechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with Ubuntu Linux, ROS/ROS2 basics, and hardware‑level communication protocols (CAN, RS232).
  • Willingness to conduct field experiments in dynamic, real‑world construction environments.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in mechanical assembly, wiring, and hardware troubleshooting of mobile bases, manipulators, and customized end-effectors.
  • Conduct sensor calibration (LiDAR, RGB-D cameras) and maintain hardware health of the robot fleet.
  • Support laboratory and on-site field trials, including preparation and safety compliance.
  • Collect, log, and analyze hardware performance and productivity data during field tests.
  • Design and fabricate mounting brackets and testing rigs using CAD (SolidWorks/AutoCAD) and 3D printing/machining.
