The School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) is seeking to hire a Research Fellow.

Overview
  • Design and advance the Centre’s research activities in biomedical optics‑related projects.
  • Conduct research in experimental optics for diagnostics and spectroscopy by developing novel approaches for bio‑imaging experiments and instrumentation, with opportunities to collaborate with external partners.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design and conduct experiments for diagnostic and spectroscopic analysis of biological samples.
  • Prepare and handle biological samples, including cells, tissues, organoids, or in vivo models, in accordance with biosafety and ethical protocols.
  • Manage research projects in a team‑based, cross‑functional environment, mentoring students and collaborating with technical and support staff.
  • Publish research outcomes in internationally‑recognized journals; present findings at academic meetings and contribute to the external visibility of the Centre.
  • Draft research reports for Principal Investigators and undertake specific roles and management functions as reasonably required.
  • Assist in drafting project proposals and participating in related committees and working groups.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations in all research activities.
  • Lead R&D and develop systems for bio‑imaging and metrology under the supervision of PIs and collaborators.
  • Coordinate research within NTU and collaborating partners in line with the research strategy.
Requirements
  • PhD in Optical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Precision Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Physics or a related discipline with a background in optics, spectroscopy and instrumentation.
  • Hands‑on experience with optical diagnostics, spectroscopy, or imaging techniques is highly desirable.
  • Experience handling human biological samples and conducting translational biomedical research.
  • Good programming and automation skills (e.g., C++, MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW).
  • Proven publication record in international journals.
  • Knowledge of optical instrumentation software (e.g., Zemax, TracePro, Virtual Lab, OSLO, ImageJ) is an advantage.
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills.
