Munich Re Group is seeking a Principal Data Scientist to shape and deliver high-impact data science and AI solutions. The role combines deep ML expertise with software engineering, setting technical direction while remaining hands-on and influencing senior stakeholders.

The successful candidate will mentor teams, strengthen governance standards, and help identify new data science propositions, driving measurable business value for clients and internal units.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in Computer Science, AI, ML, Data Science or Engineering.
• 9–12 years of hands-on data science and AI delivery with leadership.
• Deep expertise in ML, statistics, experimental design and model evaluation.
• Advanced Python and SQL with production-quality code and sound architecture.
• Experience across full ML lifecycle including MLOps and retraining.
• Ability to lead cross-functional initiatives, mentor practitioners, raise engineering standards.

Responsibilities

• Set the technical direction for high-value DS/AI initiatives, aligned with business strategy and measurable outcomes.
• Lead end-to-end delivery from opportunity identification through deployment, adoption and monitoring.
• Architect and build robust Python-based ML solutions across structured and unstructured data.
• Establish rigorous evaluation frameworks, baselines, acceptance criteria and business impact.
• Act as a trusted technical adviser and communicate options, assumptions, trade-offs and recommendations.
• Build relationships with senior stakeholders, lead workshops and present strategies to clients and executives.
• Lead technical workstreams, define delivery plans, and manage dependencies and risks.
• Mentor data scientists and engineers, raise standards through reusable patterns and reviews.
• Partner with data engineering, MLOps, platform, product and application teams to create reusable capabilities.
• Embed responsible AI, security, privacy, model governance and regulatory requirements.
