About One Step Journey Education Centre

One Step Journey (OSJ) is a small-group tuition centre in Ang Mo Kio specialising in Mathematics and Science.

Our classes are intentionally kept small, with amaximum of 6 students, allowing our teachers to understand each student's strengths, weaknesses and learning pace and provide meaningful individual attention.

As OSJ grows, we're looking to build a strong teaching team around us.

We're looking for teachers who care about teaching well, enjoy building genuine relationships with students and parents, and take ownership of their students' progress rather than simply delivering a lesson.

For the right person, we're also open to this developing into a larger orfull-time role in 2027.

The Role

You’ll initially join OSJ on a part-time basis and take on selected classes based on your subject strengths and availability.

You’ll have the opportunity to observe and train alongside our existing teachers before progressively taking greater ownership of your classes.

Depending on your strengths, you may teach:

  • Primary Mathematics

  • Primary Science

  • Secondary Mathematics

  • Secondary Science (Chemistry / Physics / Biology)

Youdo not need to teach every subject or level aboveto apply. Let us know which subjects and levels you are confident teaching.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Teach small-group classes of approximately 3–6 students

  • Explain concepts clearly and adapt your teaching to students of different abilities

  • Identify students' weaknesses, misconceptions and learning gaps

  • Guide students through practice, corrections and examination preparation

  • Prepare for lessons and familiarise yourself with OSJ's teaching materials

  • Monitor students' progress and identify areas requiring additional attention

  • Provide parents with meaningful updates on their child's progress, strengths and areas for improvement

  • Communicate confidently and professionally with parents when questions or concerns arise

  • Proactively raise important concerns rather than waiting for problems to escalte

  • Work closely with OSJ's existing teachers during the training and transition period

  • Maintain a positive, encouraging and productive classroom environment

As your role grows, there may also be opportunities to contribute to curriculum development, worksheets, student progress systems and other academic projects within OSJ.

Parent Communication & Student Ownership

At OSJ, we believe a teacher's responsibility extends beyond the two hours spent in the classroom.

Because our classes are small, we expect our teachers to know their students well, understand how they are progressing and take genuine ownership of helping them improve.

This includes being comfortable communicating with parents when necessary.

You should be able and willing to:

  • Explain a student's strengths and weaknesses clearly

  • Give honest but constructive feedback

  • Discuss examination performance and areas for improvement

  • Answer reasonable questions about a student's progress

  • Raise concerns proactively when necessary

  • Work together with parents to support the student

This doesnotmean constantly messaging parents after every lesson.

It means being willing to have thoughtful and professional conversations when an update is needed rather than avoiding difficult conversations or leaving all parent communication to someone else.

You will be supported and trained in OSJ's approach to parent communication.

Who We're Looking For

We're less concerned about finding the person with the longest résumé and more concerned about finding someone who canactually teach, communicate and take ownership of their students.

You should:

  • Have strong subject knowledge in the subjects you teach

  • Be able to explain concepts simply and clearly

  • Be patient when students don't understand something the first time

  • Be comfortable finding different ways to explain the same concept

  • Be able to adapt to students of different abilities and learning speeds

  • Communicate confidently and professionally with both students and parents

  • Be willing to provide clear and constructive progress updates

  • Take ownership when a student is struggling rather than simply completing the lesson

  • Be responsible, punctual and consistent

  • Be receptive to feedback and willing to improve

  • Genuinely enjoy working with children and teenagers

Previous tuition or classroom teaching experience is preferred, but strong candidates without extensive formal teaching experience are welcome to apply.

What Matters to Us

A good OSJ teacher isn't someone who simply finishes the worksheet.

We want teachers who notice when a student is lost, figure outwhythey're struggling, and find another way to help them understand.

Academic ability matters, but so do patience, communication, reliability and the ability to build rapport with students.

We're looking for teachers whom students enjoy learning from and whom parents can trust.

Schedule & 2026 Teaching Period

For the remainder of 2026, we are primarily looking for teachers who are available to join us duringSeptember and October, when our regular classes and examination preparation are ongoing.

Typical weekday class timings include:

  • 3:30pm–5:30pm

  • 5:30pm–7:30pm

  • Potentially 7:30pm–9:30pm

Weekend teaching opportunities may also be available depending on subject and level.

As students complete their year-end and national examinations, regular teaching hours will reduce significantly in November and December, and there may be little to no regular classroom teaching during this period.

We want to be transparent about this upstream, and candidates should not assume regular part-time teaching income during November and December.

For suitable candidates, this quieter period may provide opportunities for training, curriculum preparation and planning for the new academic year.

Regular classes will resume for the2027 academic year, with opportunities for increased teaching hours.

Selection Process

Shortlisted candidates may be invited for:

  1. An informal interview

  2. A short subject and/or teaching assessment

  3. A paid trial teaching session

We believe teaching ability is difficult to judge from a résumé alone, so the process is intended to helpboth sidesdetermine whether we're a good fit for one another.

Longer-Term Opportunity

OSJ is currently building its teaching team for 2027 and beyond.

For an exceptional teacher who fits our teaching philosophy and demonstrates strong classroom ability, communication skills, reliability and ownership of their students, there may be an opportunity to take on significantly more teaching responsibility or transition into afull-time position in 2027.

We're particularly interested in meeting educators who aren't simply looking for a few tuition hours, but who may eventually want to play a meaningful role in helping us build an excellent education centre.
