You will manage and develop ML engineering talent, set clear goals, and ensure delivery of scalable, secure AI solutions. You'll foster collaboration and drive strategic improvements in ML practices.

As the Machine Learning Engineering Manager for the Joule Work Platform Services team, you will lead efforts to build a scalable, enterprise-grade platform powering AI-driven work experiences across SAP's product portfolio. Your responsibilities include designing and developing platform services. These services enable Joule's core capabilities. These capabilities include conversational AI, agentic workflows, tool integrations, and seamless connectivity to SAP business applications. Examples of these applications are S/4HANA, SuccessFactors, and Supply Chain Management.

You will define a compelling platform vision and lead your teams to execute on it — from foundational service architecture through to reliable, production-grade delivery. As a platform engineering leader, you will represent your team's technical direction to internal and external stakeholders, including product executive team, partner teams, and customers.

You will work closely with development leads, AI/ML engineers, product owners, product managers, and DevOps colleagues. This collaboration will happen within your team and with other units. Collaboratively, you will deliver platform capabilities that help increase Joule adoption. This includes tasks like developing agents, creating evaluation frameworks, deploying at scale, and making ongoing improvements in production.

What you'll do

• Product Delivery — Define product plans and execute against committed delivery timelines; manage the day-to-day activities of the development team.
• Product Ownership — Manage the entire software development lifecycle. This includes designing, leading the implementation, and testing of new platform features. Ensure that stakeholders adopt these features in a dynamic, agile environment.
• AI Platform Development — Lead the design and delivery of agentic AI services, evaluation frameworks, and LLM-integrated platform capabilities that form the foundation of the Joule Work experience.
• Product Support — Manage customer expectations by providing product support. Ensure high standards in handling incidents. Maintain quality interactions and address issues on time, meeting SLA commitments.
• Technical Leadership — Provide architectural and functional guidance to the team; maintain hands‑on interaction to deliver highly available, scalable AI/ML platform services.
• People Management — Lead and develop your team by actively engaging with them. Manage staffing and talent development. Support career growth through mentoring and skills training. Aim to build and sustain a top‑tier AI engineering team.
• Location Leadership — Help with location-level initiatives. This involves collaborating with other units, executing training plans, managing hiring and internships, and planning the budget.

What you'll bring

• 8+ years of experience in software product development, with a deep focus on AI/ML systems and platform engineering.
• Proven track record of building a culture of design excellence and delivering high-impact AI-powered products.
• Solid command of Agile development processes, with hands‑on experience implementing agile practices across Development, QA, and Release functions.
• Ability to communicate vision and strategy clearly to engineering teams, partners, and customers.
• Demonstrated ability to build cohesive teams and drive cross‑functional collaboration.
• Technical depth sufficient to earn the respect of a senior engineering team and make credible architectural decisions.
• Solid organizational skills with comfort leading change in a fast‑moving environment.

Required technical experience

• SaaS delivery based on microservice architecture
• Container technologies: Docker, Kubernetes
• Cloud deployment on AWS, GCP, or Azure
• Proficiency in Python and/or Java
• Solid comprehension of DevOps and MLOps principles and practices
• Hands‑on experience with Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs), including prompt engineering, fine‑tuning, and evaluation
• Knowledge with agentic AI frameworks (e.g. LangChain, AutoGen, or equivalent) and RAG architectures
• Experience designing or operating LLM evaluation and observability pipelines

Nice to have: experience with SAP BTP, AI Core, or enterprise AI platform engineering
