What the role is:
HTX is Singapore's Science and Technology agency that brings together diverse scientific and engineering capabilities to develop transformative, operationally ready solutions for public safety. As a statutory board under the Ministry of Home Affairs, HTX works at the forefront of science and technology to empower the Home Team with cutting‑edge capabilities. Guided by our mission to amplify, augment and accelerate the Home Team's advantage, we are committed to keeping Singapore the safest place on planet Earth. As part of the Robotics, Automation & Unmanned Systems Centre of Expertise (RAUS CoE), the Ground Robotics Research & Technology (R&T) pillar focuses on advancing cutting‑edge robotics solutions to transform Home Team operations. We develop core capabilities across quadrupeds, humanoids, and Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) platforms, specializing in in‑house stacks for navigation, locomotion, manipulation, and whole‑body control (WBC) platforms, specializing in in‑house stacks for navigation, locomotion, manipulation, and whole‑body control (WBC). In this role, you will drive technology development, experimentation, and capability transition—ensuring solutions are scalable, reliable, and operationally relevant for front‑line deployment.
What you will be working on:
- Architect, develop, and integrate cutting edge robotics capabilities—spanning navigation, locomotion, manipulation, and whole-body control (WBC) —for individual platforms and multi-agent system-of-systems operations.
- Drive research and software stack development in edge sensing, real-time decision‑making, multi‑robot coordination, and operational artificial intelligence (e.g., VLM, VLA etc.) tailored for mission‑critical applications.
- Integrate heterogeneous robotic platforms (quadrupeds, humanoids, and traditional AMRs) with specialized sensors, edge compute, dexterous manipulation capabilities, mission payload transportation and facility infrastructure into unified, resilient field solutions.
- Develop, benchmark, and optimize modular robotics middleware (e.g., ROS 2) and open communication standards to ensure seamless interoperability and low‑latency control across diverse platform fleets.
- Support product manager in rapid prototyping, hardware‑in‑the‑loop (HIL) simulation, and rigorous stress‑testing to validate safety, autonomy, and robustness under challenging environmental conditions.
- Support end‑to‑end capability transition by planning and executing operational field trials, ensuring prototypes meet the reliability and readiness standards required for front‑line Home Team deployment.
- Support product manager in partnering with Home Team departments, research institutes, university labs, and industrial vendor ecosystems to drive co‑development and evaluate state‑of‑the‑art robotics tech.
What we are looking for:
- Degree in Robotics, Computer Science, Mechatronics, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, or a related STEM discipline.
- A post‑graduate degree in Robotics, Autonomous Systems, or Embodied AI would be an advantage.
- Minimum 2 years [DT1.1]of hands‑on experience (or equivalent track record) in robotics software development, autonomous systems engineering, or applied R&D.
- Core Robotics Stacks: Hands‑on experience developing or integrating modules across at least one key domain (in order of preference): i) Manipulation & Perception (VLA arm trajectory planning, multi‑modal sensing, sensor fusion). ii) Locomotion & Control (whole‑body control (WBC), quadruped/humanoid gait planning, MPC). iii) Navigation & SLAM (GPS‑denied mapping, open‑vocabulary ObjectNav, path planning).
- Software & Middleware Foundations: Strong proficiency in C++ and Python, with practical experience using ROS / ROS 2, Linux environments, and simulation tools (e.g., Gazebo, Isaac Sim, Webots).
- System Integration & Prototyping: Demonstrated capability in hardware‑in‑the‑loop (HIL) testing, integrating onboard sensors (LiDAR, RGB-D, IMU, tactile/haptic), edge compute units, and robotic actuators into unified systems would be an advantage.
- Middleware & Open Standards: Experience with fleet management platforms, interoperability frameworks, or smart building protocols (e.g., Open‑RMF, Open Digital Platform / ODP, DDS, MQTT, or ROS‑based microservices) would be an advantage.
- Multi‑Robot & Distributed Systems: Familiarity with heterogeneous fleet coordination, multi‑agent navigation, robot‑to‑infrastructure (R2I) communications, or system‑of‑systems architectures would be an advantage.
- Strong analytical, technical writing and problem‑solving skills.
- Excellent team player with strong stakeholder engagement and collaboration skills.
- Self‑motivated and committed with a sense of urgency to deliver desired outcomes.
- * All new hires are appointed on a two‑year contract in the first instance and will be assessed and considered for permanent tenure over time, based on performance.
As part of the shortlisting process for this role, you may be required to complete a medical declaration and/or undergo further assessment.
All applicants will be updated on the status of their applications within 4 weeks upon closing of the advertisement.
