Job summary

ARTC, part of A*STAR, seeks a Laboratory Officer to run the machining workshop and lab facilities safely. You will manage materials, tooling, and fixtures for experiments and trials while supporting data collection and inspections.

You will coordinate procurement, maintenance, and asset management, ensure 5S/ HSE compliance, and contribute to safety audits and continuous improvement initiatives while collaborating with researchers and industry partners.

Qualifications

• Relevant hands-on experience in an engineering workshop, machining facility or laboratory environment.
• Practical experience operating workshop or laboratory equipment and supporting experiments or projects.
• Strong knowledge of 5S practices and proactive HSE/risk identification and safe working.
• CAD/CAM experience (Siemens NX, SolidWorks or AutoCAD) is advantageous but not essential.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office for reporting, record keeping and resource tracking.

Job Description

The Remanufacturing Process Technology (RPT) Group at ARTC is seeking a responsible, proactive and hands-on Laboratory Officer to support the safe and efficient operation of its machining workshop and laboratory facilities. The successful candidate will maintain high 5S standards, actively support health, safety and environmental (HSE) practices, and contribute to the Workshop Committee. The role combines workshop operations, equipment and resource management, project support, procurement, maintenance coordination, utilisation tracking, and asset administration.

Responsibilites

• Operate workshop and laboratory equipment safely to support research and industry projects.
• Prepare materials, tooling and fixtures required for experiments and machining trials.
• Monitor experiments, collect process data, and support dimensional and surface-quality inspections.
• Coordinate procurement, delivery and inventory control for equipment, tooling, consumables and workshop resources.
• Plan and coordinate preventive and corrective maintenance, including mechanical and electrical installation activities for new equipment.
• Maintain equipment schedules and utilisation records to support effective capacity planning and resource allocation.
• Oversee and support asset disposal, equipment relocation, storage-space management and associated documentation.
• Maintain high 5S standards and proactively identify hazards, assess risks and recommend improvements to workshop and laboratory safety.
• Take an active role in the Workshop Committee and support HSE initiatives, audits and continuous-improvement activities.
• Prepare accurate records, reports and other documentation using Microsoft Office applications.

Job Requirements:

• Relevant hands-on experience working in an engineering workshop, machining facility or laboratory environment.
• Practical experience operating workshop or laboratory equipment and supporting experimental or project activities.
• Strong knowledge of 5S practices and a proactive approach to HSE, risk identification and safe working.
• BISAFE certification or equivalent safety training is advantageous.
• Experience with equipment maintenance coordination, procurement, asset management or utilisation tracking is preferred.
• CAD/CAM experience, including software such as Siemens NX, SolidWorks or AutoCAD, is advantageous but not essential.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications for reporting, record keeping and resource tracking.
• Able to work independently, organise competing priorities and collaborate professionally with colleagues, researchers, contractors and industry partners.
