Job summary

Responsibilities

• Maintain and stock labs with necessary instruments, equipment, glassware and supplies.
• Plan daily lab activities and duties for assigned labs.
• Procure and prepare teaching materials, chemicals, instruments and equipment.
• Ensure all supplies are safe, maintained and set up before lab sessions.
• Assist in lab experiments and provide improvement recommendations.
• Operate lab equipment following instructions and troubleshoot faults.
• Maintain maintenance records for equipment/instruments.
• Manage stock procurement and inventory controls for cost efficiency.
• Ensure procurement complies with policies and proper documentation.
• Coordinate with teaching staff and ensure risk assessments and safety protocols are followed.
• Advise on safe use of lab equipment, facilities and resources.
• Monitor Lab Officers' performance and provide on-the-job training.
• Track budget utilization and expenditure records.

Job description

Duties

1. Ensuring all assigned Science labs are adequately maintained and resourced with necessary instruments, equipment, glassware and apparatus to support scheduled lab activities for teaching and learning

2. Planning daily lab activities and duties for the assigned labs

3. Being in charge of procuring and preparing necessary teaching materials, chemicals, instruments, equipment, glassware and apparatus for scheduled lab activities

4. Ensuring all lab supplies and resources are sufficient, safe to use, well-maintained and set up properly prior to the lab activities

5. Performing, or assisting in, the trial of experiments prior to the lab sessions and providing recommendations for improvement where necessary

6. Operating lab equipment by following operating instructions and troubleshooting equipment faults or breakdowns

7. Performing, or arranging for, equipment and instrument maintenance and keeping maintenance records

8. Being in charge of procuring and maintenance of stock for teaching materials, chemicals and consumables, and employing inventory controls for cost effective operations

9. Ensuring the procurement process is compliant to the current procurement policies and procedures and ensuring all procurement documentation is well-recorded and maintained

10. Coordinating with teaching and lab staff and ensuring risk assessments are carried out and safety protocols are complied with

11. Providing advice on the safe use of lab equipment, facilities and resources

12. Monitoring the performance and professional development of the assigned Lab Officers and providing necessary on-the-job training for them

13. Monitoring budget utilization and maintaining expenditure records

14. Maintaining standards of safety and security within the assigned labs, conducting lab safety inspections and ensuring all lab safety equipment are well-maintained

15. Ensuring proper waste disposal procedures are carried out

16. Providing technical advice and support to teaching staff/specialists and students

17. Any other duties assigned by the school

Job Requirements

• Diploma in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Research or relevant

• Strong scientific knowledge and technical experience in terms of general/specialized science lab processes and procedures

• Knowledge of preparing and standardizing chemicals used in labs

• Knowledge of safe storage of lab equipment and materials

• Knowledge of Health, Safety and Environmental legislation as applied to the lab environment

• Good supervisory skills with ability to liaise well with others and delegate tasks fairly and effectively

• Able to work independently, and in a team within and across different Science labs (e.g. Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Research) with a positive attitude

• Excellent and accurate record-keeping skills, strong IT skills and effective communication skills

• Strong organization and time management skills and able to work on tight deadlines, multiple tasks and under pressure
