Job summary

Hartree Partners Singapore Pte. Limited seeks a Junior Trading Analyst to support our Japan Gas and Power trading desk, a hands-on role for building a career in physical and financial power/gas trading with senior traders.

Responsibilities include monitoring risk and P&L, maintaining curves, reconciling trades, and assisting with market analysis and scenario work. Requires Python/SQL proficiency and business-level Japanese; 0–2 years in trading or markets-adjacent roles.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field.
  • 0–2 years of experience in trading, risk, or markets-adjacent roles.
  • Strong Python, SQL skills and ability to build quantitative tools.
  • Knowledge of derivatives and willingness to learn Japan-specific market structures.
  • High attention to detail and excellent cross-team communication.
  • Business-level Japanese required to work with Japanese stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Position & risk monitoring: Track daily P&L, VaR, delta, and drawdown limits across the desk's books.
  • Market data & curve maintenance: Maintain and mark forward curves live pricing tool for Power financial derivatives, JCC, JKM, TTF, and TFU references.
  • Trade support: Book and reconcile trades; ensure accurate entry of counterparty, volume, tenor, and pricing formula details.
  • Auction preparation: Support participation in auction or ad-hoc tenders — running simulation trades, tracking allocation results, monitoring settlement timing and reconciliation of PnL and risk measures.
  • Reporting: Prepare daily/weekly risk and P&L reports.
  • Analysis: Assist senior traders in analyzing location spreads, time spreads, spark spreads, and cross-market arbitrage opportunities. Input and maintaining fundamental financial models, simulation models, and data algorithms.
  • Ad hoc analysis: Support senior traders with scenario analysis, hedge ratio calculations, and margin/lock-in economics for structured deals.

About the role

We are looking for a Junior Trading Analyst to support our Japan Gas and Power trading desk. This is a hands‑on role for someone who wants to build a career in physical and financial power/gas trading, working closely with senior traders across multiple linked cross commodity strategies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Position & risk monitoring: Track daily P&L, VaR, delta, and drawdown limits across the desk's books;
  • Market data & curve maintenance: Maintain and mark forward curves live pricing tool for Power financial derivatives, JCC, JKM, TTF, and TFU references.
  • Trade support: Book and reconcile trades; ensure accurate entry of counterparty, volume, tenor, and pricing formula details.
  • Auction preparation: Support participation in auction or ad-hoc tenders — running simulation trades, tracking allocation results, monitoring settlement timing and reconciliation of PnL and risk measures.

  • Analysis: Assist senior traders in analyzing location spreads, time spreads, spark spreads, and cross-market arbitrage opportunities.   • Ad hoc analysis: Support senior traders with scenario analysis, hedge ratio calculations, and margin/lock-in economics for structured deals.
Requirements
  • Master degree in Finance, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field.
  • 0–2 years of experience in trading, risk, or markets‑adjacent roles (internships count); prior exposure to energy/commodities markets is a plus but not required.
  • Strong Python, SQL skills; comfortable with building quantitative data analytical tools, advanced user of programming language.
  • Basic understanding of derivatives (swaps, futures, spreads) and willingness to learn Japan-specific market structures
  • High attention to detail — this desk deals with multiple pricing conventions, lag structures, and settlement timings where small errors compound.
  • Strong communication skills; comfortable working across trading, risk, and operations teams in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Japanese language proficiency (business level) is required as this role needs to work closely with Japanese stakeholders and use Japanese systems for daily work
