Job description
The Position

The Head of Medical Affairs (HoMA), ROPU ASKAN leads the Medical Affairs organization within a Therapeutic Area (TA). Throughout the developmental stages of an asset (pre-launch and post launch) and the entire life cycle of Boehringer Ingelheim products, HoMA leads the development of Medical Affairs-strategies and implementation of the corresponding Medical Affairs-activities in ASKAN. HoMA works closely together with marketing, market access, clinical development, and patient advocacy. In addition, HoMA works closely and cross-functionally interacts with other relevant (R)OPU partners to develop local strategies and activities which are aligned with and/or support the global ones.

Duties & Responsibilities:

1.STRATEGIC:

  • The Head of Medical Affairs, ROPU ASKAN is responsible for the tactical translation and execution of Medical Affairs strategy and implementation towards ensuring early and late local product acceptance, growth, and, profitability throughout the life-cycle. HoMA is responsible for the early engagement strategy several years prior to launch as well as for strategy after launch.

2. DRIVING BUSINESS RESULTS/ PROCESS/ CROSS-FUNCTIONAL COLLABORATION:

  • The Head of Medical Affairs is responsible for developing in cross-functional teams (with Marketing, Regulatory Affairs, Health Outcome & Pricing, Pharmacovigilance and other functions) strategic guidance to bring the benefit of Boehringer Ingelheim medications to our patients starting several years prior to launch and across the compound life-cycle
  • The Head of Medical Affairs, is responsible for enabling and supporting Human Pharma to profile the safety and efficacy of Boehringer Ingelheim medications by focusing on medical information, local generation and communication of relevant clinical and non-clinical data and compliant interaction with different external experts
  • The Head of Medical Affairs is responsible for developing and performing Medical Affairs activities; studies, publications or programs with external experts in alignment to the planning process, which includes guiding and implementation of or execution of all local Medical Affairs activities

3.PEOPLE:

  • The Head of Medical Affairs is responsible for ensuring that Boehringer Ingelheim attracts, develops, and, retains experts within and across therapeutic areas in prescription medicines and consumer health care in region assigned, which includes:
  • Supporting knowledge and skill sharing within the CDMQ Medical Affairs organization
  • Building relationships with respective functions with the ROPU

4.LEADERSHIP/ SUPERVISION:

  • Ensure implementation and compliance to the Performance Management / Talent Management / Compensation Planning / Boehringer Ingelheim People timelines for the year
  • Ensure that all direct reports have clear development plans in place and that these are implemented according to agreed timelines
  • Actively identify and nurture talent, facilitating discussions on succession planning and cross validation to support team growth
  • Provide appropriate coaching to the direct reports throughout the year
  • Ensure adequate team staffing and oversee the development and movement of talents within the company
  • Foster a respective, supportive and conducive working environment for all stakeholders within the TA
Requirements:
  • Doctor of Medicine or PhD in Sciences; Medical Doctor or hands-on clinical experience strongly preferred
  • Minimum of 7 years of regional experience in Medical Affairs or similar customer-facing roles within the pharmaceutical industry
  • At least 3-5 years of experience managing people
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a complex matrix environment
  • Exposure to both local and global operations is an advantage
  • Track record of successful cross-functional collaboration
  • Strong business acumen with understanding beyond core medical affairs
  • Strategic mindset with a clear focus on long-term objectives
