Job description

HCIS is seeking a candidate to provide strategic pedagogical leadership for the Year 1 to 4 (Grades 7 to 10) Mathematics curriculum, ensuring rigorous alignment with the IB Diploma Programme. The Head of Department is responsible for driving academic performance, elevating faculty instructional standards, and leading team management. Beyond operational leadership, this role will foster a culture of mathematical inquiry and pedagogical innovation, inspire teaching excellence, and actively promote the discipline of Mathematics across the school community.

Key Responsibilities

Academic Leadership & Faculty Coordination

• Lead, mentor and build the capacity of faculty teachers, conduct regular performance reviews and recommend targeted professional development in liaison with the Assistant Principal.

• Drive the design of curriculum and assessments, continuous review, and horizontal/vertical alignment of the Year 1 to 4 Mathematics curriculum to ensure seamless progression into the IB Diploma Programme.

• Conduct regular formal and informal classroom observations across all year levels (Grades 7-10) to evaluate teaching effectiveness, enforce school-wide instructional standards, and provide actionable, growth-oriented feedback that directly elevates student engagement and learning outcomes.

• Convene structured departmental meetings, maintain formal records, and ensure all faculty members align with school policies and strategic goals.

• Maintain active liaison across departments, fostering collaborative communication and reflective teaching practices to enhance quality of instructions.

People & Resource Management

• Lead, train, guide and support faculty teachers and make recommendations for appropriate in-service training.

• Conduct performance and development reviews three times a year with individual faculty members to evaluate teaching quality and mentor staff on pedagogical practices.

• Ensure that the faculty is aware of all Hwa Chong International School policies, through regular and effective liaison with faculty teachers. Encourage clear communication regarding any educational issues and feedback to improve teaching efficiency.

• Oversee the induction and progress monitoring of new hires. Including mentor less experienced faculty members.

• Coordinate operational daily lesson cover for absent faculty members to ensure uninterrupted student learning.

• Oversee the procurement, inventory, and maintenance of instructional resources for the faculty.

Faculty Planning & Accountability

• Develop, execute, and evaluate an annual Departmental Deployment and Development plan aligned with the school's strategic framework

• Budget planning and review.

• Keep School Management informed on student achievements, operational challenges, and staffing matters, providing actionable recommendations.

Assessment

• Establish, publish, and maintain a robust faculty assessment framework aligned with institutional standards.

• Collaborate with the Assessments Committee to manage internal assessments and external examinations, enforcing strict compliance with syllabus requirements.

• Performance Analytics: Analyze internal and external examination performance data to identify trends, benchmark student achievement, and implement interventions where required.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• At least a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from an established University and possess a Post-Graduate diploma/degree in Teaching.

• Minimum of 8 years of teaching experience would be advantageous.

• Demonstrated experience in the IB curriculum and prior educational leadership roles of at least 4 years are strongly preferred.

• Strong communication and stakeholder-management skills, capable of building collaborative relationships across the school and wider educational community.

• Must be able to commence on 1 January 2027.
