Job summary

BP Business Solutions India Private Limited is seeking a commercially minded lawyer to support the APAC power and carbon trading business. The role focuses on providing legal support across trading and origination activities, with emphasis on regulatory compliance and pragmatic guidance.

You will work with the ST&S legal team, internal stakeholders, and external counsel, balancing legal, regulatory and commercial considerations to enable informed business decisions.

Qualifications

• Qualified to practise law in a common law jurisdiction.

• Experience in energy, commodities or trading is a plus.

Sitting within the bp supply, trading & shipping (ST&S) legal team in Singapore, this role will support bp’s APAC power and carbon trading business.

bp’s ST&S business trades energy commodities across the globe including crude oil, refined products, gas, power and renewables. bp's APAC power & carbon business forms part of bp's global supply, trading & shipping organisation. The business is active across Japan, Australia, Singapore and New Zealand. Core activities include physical and financial power trading and origination, renewable energy transactions, battery solutions, carbon credit offtake arrangements, and risk management. The power business is expanding its activities in the Japanese and Australian power markets, while the carbon business continues to maintain a strong presence in the Australian and New Zealand compliance markets.

This role provides a unique opportunity to support a growing business in APAC and would be well suited to a commercially minded lawyer with a strong transactional background and excellent drafting skills.

This is a pooled resource role supporting the APAC power and carbon portfolio across all its business lines and jurisdictions. The role is intended to flex in line with business priorities and may, at different times, be focused entirely on either power or carbon origination. In This Role You Will:

• Providing legal support to bp's APAC power business across a broad range of trading and origination activities.
• Advising and supporting bp's APAC carbon business in maintaining and expanding its compliance carbon trading activities in Australia and New Zealand.
• Advising on the regulatory frameworks applicable to bp's power and carbon trading businesses, including licensing, regulatory reporting and ongoing compliance.
• Supporting management and business leaders by distilling complex legal and regulatory issues into clear and pragmatic recommendations that facilitate informed decision-making.
• Handling a variety of disputes relating to trading contracts and governmental and regulatory investigations.
• Building strong partnerships with ST&S legal colleagues, bp specialist legal teams, ethics & compliance, operations, commercial stakeholders and external counsel to support the business effectively.
• Working independently with business and functional stakeholders with minimal supervision and exercising sound judgement to promptly engage the Managing Counsel for APAC power and carbon on complex or sensitive matters.

Essential Experience & Job Requirements:

• Qualified to practise law in a common law jurisdiction, with a minimum of 8 years' post-qualification experience advising on complex commercial transactions, ideally in the power sector. Experience gained in related areas, including energy, commodities or trading, will also be considered.
• Strong ability to balance competing demands, lead multiple complex transactions concurrently and work effectively under tight deadlines.
• Excellent English drafting, communication skills and executive presence.
• Strong team player who can collaborate effectively across international and multicultural environments and flexibly support a diverse portfolio of matters ranging from routine commercial issues to complex bespoke transactions.
• Demonstrated commercial acumen and ability to navigate ambiguity, balancing legal, regulatory and commercial considerations to deliver pragmatic business outcomes. Desirable Criteria & Qualifications:

• Transactional experience in the power sector, including the negotiation of complex commercial arrangements.
• Experience in carbon credit trading and origination, including the negotiation of long-term supply and offtake arrangements.
• Experience in Japanese and Australian power markets, including the negotiation of bankable power purchase agreements.
• Experience advising on regulatory matters affecting power trading, carbon trading and financial products businesses.
• A sound understanding of commodity trading, market dynamics and key commercial, regulatory and operational risks across APAC.
• Working knowledge of competition/antitrust, sanctions, anti-bribery and corruption laws, and the ability to identify and upscale related legal risks
