We have an opening contract position for Chemistry Laboratory Technician in Methodist Girls' School (Secondary) and we invite candidates with positive attitude and willingness to serve to apply.

Job Purpose

The Chemistry Lab Technician provides technical, operational, and safety support to the MGS Science Department, with a primary focus on Chemistry. The role ensures that laboratory lessons, demonstrations, assessments, and related activities are well prepared, safely conducted, and efficiently supported. The Lab Technician also helps maintain a safe, organised, and well-functioning laboratory environment for both staff and students.

Key Responsibilities

1. Laboratory Preparation and Support

• Prepare chemicals, reagents, specimens, and apparatus for Chemistry practical lessons, demonstrations, assessments, and enrichment activities.
• Set up, test, and dismantle laboratory apparatus to ensure practical sessions run smoothly and effectively.
• Provide technical support during practical lessons and demonstrations to facilitate the safe and efficient conduct of experiments.
• Assist teachers in preparing and arranging laboratory resources for practical-based teaching and learning.

2. Practical Assessments and School Activities

• Support the preparation and physical setup required for practical assessments, including upper secondary practical examinations where applicable.
• Prepare chemicals and apparatus for coursework, science projects, competitions, and other school-based Science activities.
• Assist in the setup of visual aids, ICT equipment, and teaching resources for Science lessons, presentations, and departmental events.
• Support invigilation of class tests and assessments when required.

3. Equipment Maintenance and Inventory Management

• Inspect, maintain, service, and overhaul laboratory apparatus and equipment to ensure they are safe and in good working condition.
• Check, receive, unpack, label, and store chemicals, equipment, and supplies according to established procedures and safety guidelines.
• Monitor stock levels of chemicals, consumables, and apparatus, and inform relevant staff when replenishment is required.
• Maintain accurate records of inventory, stock movement, and breakages.

4. Laboratory Safety and Housekeeping

• Ensure laboratories, preparation rooms, and storage areas are kept clean, orderly, and safe at all times.
• Follow school safety procedures and support the implementation of safe laboratory practices.
• Handle, store, and dispose of chemicals and laboratory materials in accordance with safety regulations and school protocols.
• Report faulty equipment, safety hazards, and incidents promptly to the relevant personnel.

5. General and Administrative Duties

• Support the overall operational needs of the Science Department.
• Carry out other laboratory-related, administrative, and operational duties as assigned by the Head of Department, Science teachers, or School Leaders.

Requirements

• Relevant qualification(s) in Laboratory Technology, Applied Science, Chemistry, or a related field.
• Preferably with experience supporting laboratory operations in a school or educational setting.
• Good knowledge of laboratory safety practices, especially in the handling and storage of chemicals.
• Able to work independently as well as collaboratively with teachers and school staff.
• Organised, careful, and responsible, with good record-keeping practices.
• Able to manage multiple tasks and respond to operational needs in a timely manner.

Preferred Attributes

• Familiarity with the practical requirements of secondary school Science, especially Chemistry.
• Basic knowledge of laboratory equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
• Comfortable supporting the use of ICT equipment and other teaching resources.
