Overview
The Automotive t Designer is responsible for enhancing the vehicle’s visual character, designing bodykits, exterior components and styling elements that balance aesthetics, manufacturability, performance, safety and cost. The designer will work across sketching, 3D modelling, prototyping, and collaborate closely with engineering, materials, and production teams to bring designs from concept to reality.
Responsibilities
- Create concepts, sketches, renderings, and 3D models for vehicle exteriors, bodykits, and custom exterior parts (e.g., bumpers, side skirts, spoilers, diffusers).
- Develop design proposals that integrate form and function: aerodynamics, manufacturing constraints, materials (metal, carbon fiber, fiberglass, composites), lighting, etc.
- Collaborate with engineers, prototypers, and suppliers to ensure designs are production-feasible and manufacturable, considering cost, safety, mounting, fitment, tolerances.
- Produce detailed design documentation, technical drawings and specifications for exterior body parts.
- Prototype bodykit parts for fit, strength, finish, aerodynamics; carry out tests and revises based on feedback.
- Keep up with design trends, competitor bodykit & styling work, user preferences, automotive materials & finishing techniques.
- Present design options to internal stakeholders and possibly clients; gather feedback and iterate.
- Oversee aesthetics: finishes, textures, colours, trim & material choice.
- Ensure compliance with local regulations (e.g. safety, lighting, crash, vehicle modification rules) and relevant industry standards.
- Work with CAD tools, surfacing, digital clay modeling (or physical prototyping) to refine surfaces and volumes.
- Support after-sales/custom installations when required; ensure bodykit fitment & finish meet brand/quality expectations.
Qualifications and skills required
- Minimum Poly graduate in Automotive Design, Transportation or Industrial Design
- Strong competence in autoCAD, D modelling / surfacing tools: e.g., Alias, Rhino, ICEM surf, Blender, Autodesk / SolidWorks, etc.
- Minium 3-5 years of experience in relevant automotive related field.
- Portfolio of exterior/bodykit/concept work to demonstrate ability: sketch-to-3D, finished designs, custom parts or concept vehicles
- Creative flair with an understanding of vehicle proportions and brand identity.
