OpenAI Singapore is seeking a Senior Applied AI Engineer (Mandarin-speaking) to design, prototype, and scale generative AI applications on the OpenAI API. You will work with startups, act as a technical advisor, and deliver high-fidelity feedback to product teams in a fast-paced environment.

This hybrid role requires hands-on prototyping, strong customer-facing communication, and end-to-end ownership across ideation to production, with relocation support for eligible candidates.

About the Role

Applied AI Engineer on OpenAI's Applied AI Engineering team supporting Mandarin-speaking startups to design, prototype, and scale generative AI applications using the OpenAI API. Based in Singapore with a hybrid 3-days-per-week office model, the role focuses on technical advising, hands-on prototyping, and delivering high-fidelity product and model feedback to internal teams.

The Applied AI Engineer (Startups, Mandarin-speaking) will partner with strategic startup customers to guide ideation, prototyping, development, delivery, and scaling of generative AI applications built on the OpenAI API. The role serves as a technical thought partner, provides business-focused guidance, and synthesizes product and model feedback for Research and Product teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Act as a trusted technical advisor to Mandarin-speaking startup customers, helping them move from ideation to production.
• Provide proactive guidance to maximize business impact and accelerate application development.
• Experiment and prototype alongside customers to demonstrate practical GenAI use cases.
• Contribute to open-source resources, codify best practices, and publish reusable resources to scale the function.
• Synthesize and deliver high-fidelity feedback to Product and Applied Research teams.
• Build and maintain relationships within the startup ecosystem and partner with Sales on account-level opportunities.
• Own problems end-to-end and manage multiple concurrent projects with strong prioritization.

Requirements

• Fluent Mandarin is required to work with Mandarin-speaking customers and vendors.
• 5+ years of experience as a software engineer, ML engineer, or equivalent; startup or founding experience is highly valued.
• Experience building and/or delivering prototypes on top of the OpenAI API platform.
• Strong customer-facing communication skills, cross-functional collaboration, and the ability to synthesize product feedback.
• Demonstrated ability to operate with high throughput, drive multiple projects, and take end-to-end ownership.
• Role is based in OpenAI’s Singapore office with a hybrid work model (3 days in office per week).
• Relocation assistance is offered for new employees relocating to Singapore.
