European Spallation Source ERIC (ESS) invites applications for a Senior Scientific Software Developer focusing on interactive data analysis applications for neutron scattering. Qualifications

  • Strong Python development experience and a portfolio of software used by real users.
  • Experience with scientific computing, data analysis, or technically complex applications.
  • Familiarity with modern development practices such as testing, CI/CD, and version control.
  • Experience delivering and maintaining production‑quality scientific software, making pragmatic technical decisions, and providing mentoring and technical leadership.
  • Experience in neutron scattering, x‑ray science, reflectometry, or spectroscopy is valuable but not required.
  • Familiarity with PyQt, PySide, QML, or Jupyter is beneficial.

Senior Scientific Software Developer – Scientific Data Analysis Applications

The European Spallation Source (ESS) is one of Europe’s largest research infrastructure projects and is building the world’s most powerful neutron source. Through cutting‑edge science and technology, ESS enables discoveries that advance our understanding of materials, energy, health, and the environment.

About the team

We build the analysis applications and libraries scientists use to explore and interpret neutron scattering data. Our work combines scientific methods, instrument expertise, and software engineering to create reliable and user‑friendly tools. We collaborate closely with DMSC developers, ESS instrument scientists, and users from the neutron community. Most of our software is written in Python using the DMSC‑developed EasyScience framework (https://github.com/easyScience) and includes contributions to open‑source projects such as SasView (https://www.sasview.org).

About the role

This hands‑on scientific software engineering role focuses on interactive data analysis applications and scientific platforms for neutron scattering experiments. You will work with ESS scientists and users to define requirements and build tools that support research from data exploration to scientific interpretation. Your work will also involve collaborating with the DMSC data‑reduction team and improving the usability, functionality, and quality of scientific software at ESS.
