Job summary

SIL Mauritius is seeking a senior infrastructure specialist to lead design, implementation, and operation of complex enterprise Unix, Linux and Solaris environments across client sites. You will act as technical authority, define standards for clustering, virtualization, and backup, and own cloud and hybrid deployments with emphasis on high availability, security and continuous improvement.

This role requires mentoring junior staff and building strong client relationships to drive service

Qualifications

• Master's degree in IT would be an advantage.
• Bachelor's degree in information technology, Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field.
• A minimum of 8 years’ post-qualification experience, including demonstrated experience in a senior or lead technical role.
• Strong, demonstrable expertise in Solaris and Linux administration
• Solaris Certified System Administrator and Red Hat Certified System Administrator (or equivalent) required; an advanced/architect-level certification (e.g. RHCA, VMware VCAP) would be an advantage.
• Proven track record of leading complex infrastructure projects and mentoring junior and senior technical staff.

Responsibilities

• Own the installation audit programme and present recommendations to management.
• Set and maintain technical documentation standards across all sites.
• Design and deliver advanced training and knowledge-transfer programmes and mentor Senior Technology Consultants.
• Lead tender proposal preparation and maintenance agreements with primary technical ownership.
• Build strong senior-level client relationships to identify opportunities for service delivery improvements.
• Evaluate emerging UNIX, Solaris, virtualization, cloud and backup technologies and advise on adoption.

Job Purpose

To provide strategic and technical leadership in the design, implementation, maintenance, and optimization of complex enterprise Unix, Linux, and Oracle Solaris environments, ensuring high availability, performance, security, scalability, and reliability while supporting customer requirements and Organisational objectives.

Key Responsibilities

• Act as the technical authority and escalation point for complex UNIX and Solaris environments across client sites, taking ownership of the most critical and business-sensitive incidents.
• Define and review architecture and design standards for clustering (Veritas Cluster or similar), virtualization (KVM, Logical Domains/LDOM, VMware) and backup solutions (Veritas NetBackup, VEEAM), ensuring solutions are scalable, resilient and aligned with best practice.
• Lead the design, planning and implementation of cloud-based and hybrid infrastructure solutions, taking overall technical accountability for integration and deployment across client environments.
• Provide senior technical leadership to maintenance and project teams, allocating work, reviewing quality of delivery and taking ultimate accountability for customer service outcomes.
• Lead root-cause analysis and resolution of the most complex, multi-layered system and network issues, ensuring minimum downtime and maximum availability, and put in place preventive measures to avoid recurrence.
• Own the installation audit programme: set audit standards, review findings from consultants, evaluate systemic out-of-line situations and present recommendations to management.
• Set and maintain technical documentation standards across all maintained sites, and review documentation produced by other consultants for completeness and accuracy.
• Design and deliver advanced training and knowledge-transfer programmes for internal technical staff and client teams, locally and internationally, and mentor and coach Senior Technology Consultants.
• Lead the costing, technical preparation and mounting of tender proposals and maintenance agreements, in collaboration with the Manager – Infrastructure and Cloud, taking primary technical ownership rather than an assisting role.
• Build and maintain strong, senior-level relationships with client stakeholders, proactively identifying opportunities to strengthen service delivery and account growth.
• Evaluate emerging UNIX, Solaris, virtualization, cloud and backup technologies, and make recommendations on their adoption within the company’s service offering.
• Ensure quality processes are adhered to across all engagements and drive continuous improvement of standards and procedures.
• Install, configure, patch, upgrade, and maintain Linux and Solaris operating systems.
• Administer Solaris Zones, Logical Domains (LDoms), Oracle VM Server for SPARC, and Linux virtual machines.
• Configure and manage ZFS, LVM, file systems, storage volumes, snapshots, and mount points.
• Manage users, groups, permissions, processes, services, packages, and scheduled jobs.
• Support Solaris technologies such as SMF, IPS, ZFS, Zones, LDoms, and Live Upgrade.
• Manage backup, recovery, system restoration, disaster recovery testing, and business continuity activities.
• Carry out such acts as shall be required for the proper fulfilling of duties listed under items (i) to (xviii) above.
