We are seeking a motivated postdoctoral researcher to develop and apply environmental DNA (eDNA) as a tool for early detection of forest pathogens. In this project, you will have the opportunity to combine molecular biological methods with field studies and data analysis to enhance preparedness against forest diseases and promote sustainable forestry practices. About the project

This postdoctoral project aims to develop new techniques for collecting and analyzing airborne environmental DNA (eDNA) in forest environments, with a focus on fungi and insects that cause substantial damage to Swedish forestry. The project is a collaboration between Komatsu Forest, Sveaskog, the Forest Technology Cluster, SLU Umeå, and Umeå University, offering a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of molecular biology, forest technology, and applied innovation. The goal is to utilize existing filters in forest machines to collect eDNA, enabling cost-efficient and continuous monitoring of forest pathogens. By combining samples collected from machines operating in different regions with GPS and time data, we can map the occurrence of various pests and pathogens in both time and space. The project also includes the development of new sampling technology specifically adapted for forwarders. The collected samples will be analyzed to improve our understanding of the spread and dynamics of forest pathogens and to support the development of new forest health monitoring tools. The project has strong applied potential and may lead to the commercialization and patenting of innovative collection technologies, with the ambition to revolutionize the monitoring of forest diseases and pest insects in the future.

Your profile

Since postdoctoral projects are career-development appointments for junior researchers, we primarily seek candidates who hold a PhD degree obtained within the past three years, in one of the following fields: molecular biology, microbiology, biotechnology, ecology, bioinformatics, or related disciplines. Experience with DNA-based analytical methods (e.g., qPCR, sequencing, metabarcoding, or eDNA) is required. Previous work with air sampling, field studies, pathogen detection, or bioinformatic analysis is meritorious. Experience in handling large datasets or geographical data (e.g., GPS/GIS) is also an advantage.

We are seeking a highly motivated and curious researcher who aspires to advance their academic career in applied molecular ecology and forest health. Emphasis will be placed on (1) applicant’s scientific excellence in molecular biology, microbiology, or eDNA technology, (2) proven ability to work independently and contribute to the development of new methods, and (3) shown interest in interdisciplinary collaboration between academia and industry. Personal qualities such as initiative, creativity, and the ability to work constructively in a small research group are highly valued. Excellent command of English, both spoken and written, is required.
