Postdoc in alloy design and materials modelling in AM

Since its founding in 1827, KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm has grown to become one of Europe’s leading technical and engineering un...

At the Department of Materials Science and Engineering we are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join our research team in material modelling and alloy development for powder and wire based additive manufacturing (AM). Despite its already explored vast potential, the applicability of AM might be still limited since the material flow from feedstock production to manufacturing and recycling is still limited, which harms the resource effectiveness of AM. This is due to the lack of sustainable metals for AM, inefficient production of powder and wire materials, and lack of recycling and re-use/reshape/repurpose approaches. The EU-funded REPAM project aims to tackle these issues by focusing on different methods to reduce the amount of material and energy required to produce metal feedstocks for additive manufacturing, from both experimental and multi-scale materials modelling from feedstock processing to the manufacturing. It also addresses novel manufacturing techniques to obtain improved performance, such as mechanical properties, using the developed feedstocks.

As a part of this project, new resource-efficient alloys will be developed, considering the current challenges in feedstock production and additive manufacturing, e.g., solidification cracking, and their performance during feedstock production, additive manufacturing and service, e.g., static and dynamic mechanical behavior, will be evaluated through computational modelling (including CALPHAD, Phase field/Cellular Automata, FEM) and experiments. The current position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to advancing materials science in AM by exploring innovative alloys and enhancing process-material relationships through advanced computational and experimental approaches and contributing to the EU-funded project with a vast diverse consortium of universities, institutes, and industries.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform computational materials modelling (e.g., CALPHAD, Phase field/Cellular Automata, or FEM) to predict microstructural evolution, and mechanical properties after feedstock production and AM processes.
  • Develop and optimize alloy compositions tailored for additive manufacturing, by implementing the developed materials modelling framework.
  • Collaborate on experimental validation of computational models using state-of-the-art characterization techniques.
  • Investigate process-structure-property relationships in AM materials, linking processing/manufacturing history to microstructure and performance.
What we offer
  • A position at a leading technical university that generates knowledge and skills for a sustainable future
  • Engaged and ambitious colleagues along with a creative, international and dynamic working environment
  • Work in Stockholm, in close proximity to nature
  • An opportunity and support to develop expertise via access to a broad range of advanced computational resources and materials characterization instruments at Hultgren laboratory and large-scale infrastructures.
  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree in materials science, mechanical engineering, or closely-related area for the proposed research. This eligibility requirement must be met no later than the time the employment decision is made.
  • Experience in computational alloy design and solidification and microstructural modelling, proven by a track record of high impact journal publications and international conference presentations.
  • The ability to express yourself very well in English, spoken and written, as this will be required in day-to-day work
  • You are self-motivated with a strong ability to take initiative and run projects.

As a person, you have well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills and like to take responsibility. You have strong collaboration skills including the ability to lead and to support research

Preferred qualifications

  • A doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree, obtained within the last three years prior to the application deadline
  • Hands-on knowledge in powder and wire based additive manufacturing of alloys is highly meritorious.
  • Awareness of diversity and equal opportunity issues, with specific focus on gender equality

Great emphasis will be placed on personal skills.

Log into KTH's recruitment system to apply for this position. You are responsible for ensuring that your application is complete according to the instructions in the ad.

The application must include:

  • CV including relevant professional experience and knowledge.
  • Copy of diplomas and grades from your previous university studies. Translations into English or Swedish if the original documents have not been issued in any of these languages.
