Job description

Overview
Essity – a leading global hygiene and health company and the home of brands like Libero, TENA, Libresse, Tork, Sorbact and JOBST is offering an exciting and challenging master thesis opportunity for you who want to contribute with your expertise, energy and creativity.

About the job
Are you passionate about combining engineering with human anatomy? We are offering a master thesis project where you will play a key role in improving our digital human body models. This is a unique chance to contribute to cutting-edge product development while gaining deep expertise in biomechanics and finite element (FE) modeling.

Your role
As a thesis student, you will help us refine our understanding of how products interact with the human body. By developing more realistic digital avatars, you will provide valuable insights that support safer, more user-centered product design. Your work will directly influence the accuracy and applicability of our simulations.

Background
Understanding how products interact with people is central to our development process. To achieve this, we rely on digital representations of the human body built from scientific data and anatomical insights. Because anatomy varies across individuals—by factors such as sex, age, and body mass index (BMI)—our goal is to continuously refine our models to better reflect reality and align with the latest research.

Project
Your thesis project will focus on evaluating and improving digital human body models. The scope includes:

  • Conducting a literature study on bone, muscle, and fat placement across different body types and applying this knowledge to existing avatars.
  • Simulating variations in fat and muscle thickness and aligning results with literature data for different body parts.
  • Testing the improved avatars in a product–user interaction case to demonstrate their value in practice.

While part of the work involves FE modeling, the main emphasis will be on interpreting scientific literature and translating it into enhanced digital representations. We also welcome applications from two students working together—one focusing on FE and one on anatomy.

Your profile
Relevant academic background: Master program within Biomedicine, Engineering Physics, IT etc.

  • Interest in human anatomy and body modeling
  • Strong technical interest in finite element (FE) analysis, preferably with Abaqus
  • Motivation to explore both technical and biological aspects of body modeling

This master thesis project will require close collaboration with our team and regular presence at our office in Gothenburg. Therefore, we are looking for students in Sweden who are either based in the Gothenburg area or are able to arrange accommodation locally for the duration of the project.

What you will be a part of
You will join a team dedicated to advancing digital human models as part of our broader mission to design products with the user in focus. Here, you will contribute to a forward-looking development process that combines engineering expertise with cutting-edge scientific research to create better and more effective solutions.
