The Role
Etraveli Group is undergoing a significant data transformation, building a robust and highly scalable new data platform to power our internal operations and external data products. As the Manager Data Platform, you will take full ownership of the technical direction and capabilities of our core data lakehouse. You will work at the critical intersection of technical architecture, data engineering execution and strategic business demands in a dual role. Technically, you are the Platform Owner, taking direct responsibility for prioritizing the work of the Data Operations team and ensuring the underlying infrastructure is robust, scalable, and secure. Organizationally, you are the Line Manager for both the Data Engineering and Data Operations teams. You will work in close partnership with an external Product Owner who prioritizes our Data Engineering initiatives. Because every Data Engineering initiative relies on the foundation and support of the Data Operations team, your ability to align technical capacity, manage cross‑team dependencies, and foster collaboration is critical. You will ensure technical quality, drive architectural vision (including ML), and cultivate a healthy, high‑performing environment for all your engineers. This is a foundational, high‑impact role—you will not just be keeping the lights on, but actively designing, managing and scaling the technical engine that drives an fast‑growing travel tech company’s data future.
Platform Technical Ownership & Management
- Act as the Platform Owner, taking direct responsibility for prioritizing the day‑to‑day work, technical roadmap, and operational maintenance for the Data Operations team.
- Partner closely with the business Data & BI organisation which prioritises our Data Engineering backlog and ensure that the Data Operations team has the capacity and alignment to support all incoming Data Engineering initiatives.
- Actively manage technical debt across the platform. Explain the business benefits of infrastructure upgrades, security patches and maintenance to external stakeholders to ensure platform stability isn’t compromised for feature delivery.
Line Management & Team Culture
- Serve as the dedicated Line Manager for both the Data Engineering and Data Operations teams, taking responsibility for 1‑on‑1s, performance reviews and career growth.
- Create a productive, safe and healthy team environment by driving continuous improvements in how both teams work together and execute.
- Conduct interviews, filter candidates and drive the hiring process for open positions across both DE and DataOps.
- Drive the team onboarding process. Ensure comprehensive onboarding materials exist, assign mentors and actively coach new and existing team members.
Technical Vision & Quality
- Define and support the long‑term technical vision across IT for the data platform.
- Drive the design and implementation of scalable machine learning architecture and AI‑ready infrastructure.
- Take accountability for the technical quality of output from both data engineering and data operations teams, driving long‑term tech domain improvement.
- Promote engineering best practices within the teams and coordinate these standards across the wider organisation.
- Act as the technical safety net—proactively identifying and raising critical technical risks to IT or Product leadership as needed.
Cross‑Functional Alignment & Agile Facilitation
- Take responsibility for coordinating communication between your teams, the external Data Product Owner and other team leads to successfully meet business needs.
- Organise efficient technical planning. Facilitate necessary team meetings (e.g., architecture syncs, dependency planning, retrospectives) to promote efficiency and alignment between DE and DataOps.
- Drive cross‑team education, knowledge sharing, and cross‑team onboarding to prevent silos between operations and engineering.
Requirements
- 3+ years in engineering management, tech leadership, or technical platform ownership, with direct experience managing engineers (specifically Data Engineers, DevOps, or DataOps) and 7+ years of experience within IT.
- Experience in a matrixed environment and proven ability to work alongside external Product Owners, successfully balancing competing priorities, managing technical dependencies, and negotiating capacity.
- Deep modern data stack knowledge and strong practical understanding of data infrastructure, ELT/ETL pipelines, (on‑prem) cloud architectures and compute orchestration.
- Experience designing scalable systems, with a solid understanding of how to implement and support machine learning architecture.
- Excellent ability to coordinate cross‑team communication and comfortably explain technical trade‑offs (like tech debt vs. feature delivery) to non‑technical stakeholders and POs.
- Demonstrated dedication to coaching, mentoring, and building healthy engineering cultures.
Nice to Have
- Background in travel tech, e‑commerce or a high‑throughput transaction technology company.
- Hands‑on familiarity with tools such as Spark, Dremio, dbt, Airflow or similar infrastructure components.
- Deep understanding of implementing technical data governance, data masking and compliance requirements (e.g., GDPR) at the infrastructure level.
- Exposure to providing the infrastructure and compute requirements for AI/ML pipelines, LLMs or agentic systems.
