Job summary

Blykalla, based in Stockholm, seeks a Nuclear Waste System Engineer to own the design of SEALER's waste management systems, covering liquids, gases, and solids over the reactor’s life. You will define design requirements and coordinate with safety and licensing teams to meet European and US regulatory expectations.

The role requires 5+ years in radioactive waste management, a relevant engineering degree, and fluency in English (Swedish is a plus).

Qualifications

5+ years of professional experience in radioactive waste management.
Degree in nuclear, chemical, environmental, or a closely related engineering discipline.
Working knowledge of liquid radwaste treatment (evaporation, ion exchange, filtration), gaseous waste cleanup (HEPA, adsorbers, delay beds), and solid waste conditioning (cementation, drum packaging).
Familiarity with nuclear waste categorisation (LLW, ILW, HLW) and disposal routes in at least one national regulatory framework.
Comfort writing clear technical specifications, reviewing supplier deliverables critically, and managing a multi‑vendor technical dialogue from concept through qualification.
Familiarity with CAD tools and engineering software.

Responsibilities

Define the functional and design requirements for SEALER's radioactive waste management systems, covering liquid, gaseous, and solid waste streams.
Develop and maintain the design basis for cover gas cleanup, liquid radwaste treatment, and solid waste characterisation, packaging, and storage.
Lead lead trade‑off studies on waste minimisation at source versus downstream treatment, and quantify the impact on plant footprint, cost, and dose.
Interface with the Nuclear and Safety and licensing teams on waste categorisation, disposal routes, and regulatory expectations in Europe (SSM) and in the US (NRC).
Define the scope of supplier work packages on waste system equipment, evaluate proposals, and steer their execution through qualification.
Coordinate with the Material and Lead Chemistry teams on activation products and the handling of lead‑contaminated components.
Support decommissioning‑oriented design choices during the concept and preliminary design phases.
Contribute to the waste‑related sections of the plant safety case and licensing documentation.
