Job summary

Blykalla in Stockholm seeks an experienced Nuclear Chemistry System Engineer to own the chemistry of SEALER's fluid systems, from molten lead to water-steam chemistry. You will define the chemistry envelope and translate requirements into practical engineering solutions across instrumentation and systems.

Join a multidisciplinary team and contribute to safety analyses, startup/shutdown strategies, and collaboration with suppliers and research partners.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of professional experience in industrial or nuclear chemistry.
• Degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials, nuclear engineering, or a related field.
• Strong understanding of high-temperature chemistry, corrosion mechanisms, and interactions between coolant chemistry and materials.
• Experience with chemistry instrumentation, measurement, or sampling systems.
• Ability to translate chemistry requirements into system-level engineering solutions.
• Comfortable writing technical specifications and working with suppliers, researchers, and engineers from other disciplines.
• Fluent in English, spoken and written.
• Fluency in Swedish is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Define chemistry requirements for primary lead loop and secondary water-steam systems in collaboration with Materials team.
• Develop systems and instrumentation to monitor and control chemistry, including oxygen control and impurity management.
• Lead trade-off studies on chemistry control strategies and monitoring technologies.
• Collaborate with suppliers and academic/industrial partners on instrumentation and lead chemistry.
• Support chemistry-related operating strategies for startup, normal operation, shutdown, and abnormal conditions.
• Work with Nuclear Waste System Engineer on chemistry inputs like polonium and impurity streams.
• Contribute to safety analyses for chemistry-related events.

Job description

You will own the chemistry of SEALER's fluid systems, from the molten lead in the primary loop to the water-steam chemistry on the secondary side. You will define the chemistry envelope in which the plant operates and help develop the systems, instrumentation, and operational strategies that keep it there.

The role sits at the intersection of chemistry and system engineering. You will work closely with our Materials team to ensure compatibility between coolants and structural materials, and translate chemistry requirements into practical engineering solutions for oxygen control, impurity management, water chemistry, and cover gas systems.

What you'll get to do

• Define chemistry requirements for the primary lead loop and secondary water-steam systems, in close collaboration with the Materials team.
• Develop the systems and instrumentation used to monitor and control chemistry, including oxygen control, impurity management, water chemistry conditioning, and cover gas systems.
• Lead trade-off studies on chemistry control strategies and monitoring technologies.
• Work with suppliers and academic and industrial partners on instrumentation, lead chemistry, and R&D.
• Support chemistry-related operating strategies for startup, normal operation, shutdown, and abnormal conditions.
• Work with the Nuclear Waste System Engineer on chemistry-related inputs such as polonium, activation products, and impurity streams.
• Contribute to safety analyses for chemistry-related events, including loss of chemistry control and ingress events.

Who you'll get to work with

You will join Blykalla's Fluid Systems Engineering Team and report to the Manager of Fluid Systems Engineering. You will work closely with our Materials, Nuclear and Safety, and Test and Validation teams, as well as with external partners working on lead chemistry and materials.

Who you are

You are an experienced chemist or engineer who enjoys turning complex chemistry into practical engineering solutions. You are comfortable working across disciplines and taking ownership in an environment where both the technology and the organisation are developing quickly.

We think the following will help you succeed in the role:

• More than 5 years of professional experience in industrial or nuclear chemistry, ideally involving coolant chemistry, corrosion control, or high-temperature chemistry.
• A degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials, nuclear engineering, or a related field.
• Strong understanding of high-temperature chemistry, corrosion mechanisms, and interactions between coolant chemistry and structural materials.
• Experience with chemistry instrumentation, measurement, or sampling systems.
• Ability to translate chemistry requirements into system-level engineering solutions.
• Comfortable writing technical specifications and working with suppliers, researchers, and engineers from other disciplines.
• Fluent in English, spoken and written.
• Fluency in Swedish is a plus.

Meritorious skills:

• Experience with heavy liquid metal chemistry (lead, lead-bismuth), especially oxygen control and polonium handling.
• Familiarity with sodium chemistry in sodium-cooled fast reactors, or with molten salt chemistry.
• Prior involvement in reactor coolant chemistry for a nuclear plant (LWR primary or secondary chemistry, CANDU heavy water chemistry, etc.).
• Nuclear licensing experience on chemistry-related topics.
• Experience with FeCrAl or other alumina-forming alloys and their oxide layer development.
• Familiarity with tritium management in fusion or advanced fission systems.
