Job description

The HS Data Automation Specialist plays a pivotal role in improving health, safety, and operational efficiency by automating data flows and implementing a digital work permit system. This position combines technical data automation skills with hands-on safety system setup and stakeholder training to ensure safe, compliant, and data-informed worksites.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the setup and configuration of the digital work permit system, including defining templates for general risks, mitigations, and permits.
  • Design and execute a pilot implementation of the digital permit system, gather feedback, refine workflows, and prepare for broad launch.
  • Establish and maintain an archival process so finished work permits are traceably stored reliably in the document management system.
  • Develop and deliver targeted trainings for contractors, construction managers, permit issuers, and onsite workers to ensure confident use of the permit system and adherence to safety procedures.
  • Configure and manage delegation chains for permit issuers, ensuring clear roles, approval flows, and auditability.
  • HS Data Automation:
  • Automate HS data pipelines by downloading and integrating data from cloud platforms and environmental loggers (dust/particle, gas sensors, and weather data).
  • Build and maintain processes or low-code automations that transform logger data into actionable dashboards, alerts, and archival records.
  • Provide weekly progress reports on implementation, training uptake, data automation status, and risk mitigation metrics to stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with IT, contractors, and document control to ensure system security, data integrity, and regulatory compliance.
Profile
  • Practical problem-solver with a balance of technical automation experience and strong HS/safety awareness.
  • Clear communicator and empathetic trainer who can translate technical processes to non-technical users across contractor and site teams.
  • Detail-oriented and process-driven, with an emphasis on auditability, delegation clarity, and reliable archival practices.
  • Proactive collaborator who values continuous improvement, stakeholder feedback, and measurable impact on site safety and operations.
Required Skills & Experience
  • Experience configuring and implementing digital permit or workflow systems, including risk/mitigation setup and delegation rules.
  • Hands-on experience with data automation: extracting/downloading data from cloud platforms and loggers (dust/particle sensors, gas monitors, weather stations) and integrating into reporting or archival systems.
  • Proven ability to design and run pilots, gather user feedback, and scale implementations for broader rollouts.
  • Experience preparing and delivering trainings to diverse groups (contractors, permit issuers, site supervisors) and producing training materials and user guides.
  • Strong documentation skills and experience ensuring finished permits and related records are archived in document management systems.
  • Good written and verbal English communication skills and ability to produce weekly progress reports for stakeholders.
Nice to Have
  • Familiarity with digital work permit platforms.
  • Experience with ETL tools, scripting languages (Python, PowerShell), or low-code automation platforms for data ingestion and transformation.
  • Knowledge of environmental monitoring sensor types, data formats (CSV, JSON, APIs), and time-series data handling.
  • Prior experience in construction, heavy industry, or complex site environments with multi-contractor setups.
Deliverables & Success Metrics
  • Successful configuration and deployment of the digital work permit system and approval/delegation chains.
  • Archived repository of completed permits in the document management system with traceable metadata and retention rules.
  • Training program and schedule delivered; measurable adoption metrics for contractors, construction managers, permit issuers, and workers.
  • Automated HS data pipelines that reliably download logger data (dust/particles, gases, weather) and populate dashboards or reports.
  • Weekly progress reports delivered on time showing implementation milestones, training completion rates, data quality indicators, and outstanding risks.
  • Key performance indicators such as permit processing time reduction, training uptake percentage, data ingestion uptime, and reduction in manual errors.
Tools, Technologies & Domain Context

The role utilizes digital work permit platforms, cloud storage and APIs for retrieving logger data, scripting tools for automation, and document management systems for archival. The environment is collaborative and improvement-focused, offering opportunities to influence safety culture, scale digital solutions, and develop data-driven HS practices.
