Job summary

ESS invites applications for an Instrument Scientist for the DREAM powder diffractometer in Lund. The role sits in the Diffraction & Imaging Division and focuses on commissioning with neutrons, with operations planned for 2027–2028 and entry into ESS user programmes thereafter.

The successful candidate will work with the core instrument team and partner institutions, publish scientific results, and contribute to instrument upgrades and safety.

Qualifications

• PhD in experimental studies relevant to DREAM, preferably energy or nanoscaled materials.
• Practical experience in neutron powder diffraction.
• Working knowledge of diffraction data analysis software (GSAS-II, TOPAS, FullProf, Jana2006, PDFgui).
• Independent research record with publications.
• Ability to work both independently and in a team, with strong communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Commission the DREAM instrument with neutrons and lead commissioning activities.
• Collaborate with the core instrument team and partner institutions to deliver capabilities.
• Interact with ESS staff and users to support experiments and data collection.
• Contribute to instrument upgrades and safety and operational practices.
