Job summary

Avanza Bank is expanding into Denmark and seeks a Data Engineer to build data pipelines and models that turn raw data into actionable business insights. You will work with BigQuery, Kafka, and dbt in a data mesh setup, collaborating closely with software engineering teams.

Ideal candidates have strong SQL, data modeling, and API design skills, plus a passion for observability and scalable data platforms. English proficiency is required; Swedish is a plus.

• Experience with streaming data and message queues (e.g., Kafka).
• Strong background in software engineering (e.g., Java) and API design in distributed environments—you have your primary focus in data, but can code application logic when needed.

• A humble, solution-oriented mindset where you prioritise team success and knowledge sharing.
• Professional working proficiency in English, Swedish is a bonus but not a must.

We are currently operating as an internal startup at Avanza, building a brand-new platform to expand our business into Denmark. We are now looking for a Data Engineer who is ready to step outside their comfort zone, interface seamlessly with software engineering teams, and help build the foundation for our next big journey.

As a Data Engineer in our expansion team, you will help transform raw data into business value through robust pipelines and sustainable data models. We work according to data mesh principles, meaning you will both provide and consume data in a decentralised landscape. Our tech stack rests on BigQuery, Kafka for real-time streaming, and dbt for transformation logic.

You will become part of an autonomous team with a strong mandate to shape both architecture and ways of working. We value the craft of data engineering and apply core software development principles such as traceability and scalability—often through pair programming and close cross-functional collaboration.

• Experience working with Python for advanced data automation or AI/ML integrations.
• A curiosity and passion for taking an AI-first approach to problem-solving and software/data development.
• Prior experience working in a regulated environment such as banking or fintech.
