Job description

Mojang Studios is best known as the creators of Minecraft, but we’re also on a mission – to build a better world through the power of play.

Why play? Well, play is at the heart of everything we do. It’s the blocky backbone of our games, the core of our development philosophy, and even the origin of our name. From the relentless experimentation of our endlessly inspiring community to the classrooms where Minecraft has become an essential teaching tool, play is the bedrock of our existence.

Role overview

The Minecraft team is expanding to help realize our dream of a better Minecraft experience. As a member of this team, you will help create gameplay features that allow our incredible community to realize their creations using mechanics and technologies you helped create. You will also contribute to improving the performance and stability of the game as a whole.

You’ll join a cross-functional team and collaborate with engineers, designers, artists and colleagues in quality assurance, all contributing to a game enjoyed by over 100,000,000 players worldwide. We have big dreams for the future of Minecraft and need you to help make them happen.

Minecraft is developed across Java and Bedrock, and our team works with both editions. You do not need to know every part of Minecraft when you join. We are looking for someone with a good foundation in C++, an interest in gameplay development and a willingness to learn and solve problems together with others. You will have room to contribute your own perspective while learning from and sharing knowledge with people across different disciplines.

This is a full-time role based in Stockholm with a hybrid working model, where we work from the office three days a week. Please note that we are currently only considering candidates based in Sweden.

As a Game Engineer in the Minecraft Gameplay team, you will:
  • Implement, test and iterate on new and existing gameplay features for upcoming Minecraft updates.
  • Work with game designers, artists, quality assurance and other developers to turn ideas into experiences for our players.
  • Contribute to technical and design discussions throughout the development of a feature.
  • Investigate and resolve issues in gameplay features and their underlying systems.
  • Help improve the quality, performance and stability of the game.
  • Participate in code reviews and share knowledge with other members of the team.
To succeed in this role, we believe you will need:
  • At least 3-5 years of experience developing software in modern C++.
  • Experience implementing, debugging and testing software features.
  • An understanding of common software engineering practices.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate in English.
Helpful experience:
  • Experience with gameplay development.
  • Experience with Java.
  • Experience working with large or cross-platform codebases.
  • An interest in Minecraft and its gameplay.

If the role sounds interesting but your experience does not match everything listed above, we still encourage you to apply. We value different experiences and perspectives, and we are interested in what you could bring to the team and how you would grow in the role.
