Job summary

We're looking for an AI-focused technologist who wants to do more than experiment with new tools and build proofs of concept. This is an opportunity to help shape how AI is used across a large, people-focused organisation, identifying valuable opportunities, developing practical solutions and taking them through to implementation.

The organisation is investing in its digitalisation agenda and has already identified a range of potential AI use cases across its operations. The next step is to turn those ideas into working solutions that deliver measurable value.

You'll work closely with business stakeholders, data and technology teams to understand operational challenges, explore what AI can realistically achieve and lead the development and implementation of solutions. You'll have the freedom to experiment, test ideas and help establish the direction for AI going forward, while remaining close to the technical delivery yourself.

The role:

This is a broad, hands-on role sitting at the intersection of AI, data, technology and business development. You'll help bridge the gap between identifying an opportunity and delivering a solution that people can actually use.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Identify and prioritise AI opportunities by working with business stakeholders to understand their challenges, explore potential use cases and assess where AI and automation can make a meaningful difference.
• Take AI initiatives from idea to implementation, leading discovery, prototyping, development and deployment, rather than leaving projects at the proof-of-concept stage.
• Shape the AI roadmap and strategy, helping the organisation decide which opportunities to pursue, how to prioritise them and what technical approach makes the most sense.
• Build and experiment with AI solutions, working hands-on with modern AI tools, LLMs, APIs and relevant data technologies to develop and validate practical solutions.
• Connect business needs with technical delivery, translating operational requirements into clear technical approaches and working closely with developers and other technology specialists to bring solutions to life.
• Evaluate and improve existing pilots, testing what works, measuring outcomes and identifying opportunities to scale successful solutions across different parts of the organisation.
• Support adoption and continuous improvement, ensuring solutions are useful, reliable and integrated into real workflows, with appropriate consideration for data quality, security and responsible AI use.

What we're looking for:

We're interested in someone who combines a solid technical foundation with commercial awareness and the ability to work directly with the business.

You don't need to be a long-established AI executive or a career strategist. We're looking for someone who understands the technology, enjoys building things and can take ownership of moving AI initiatives forward.

You'll ideally bring:

• Experience in AI engineering, applied AI, data engineering, software development or a closely related technical field.
• Practical experience building AI-powered applications, automations, prototypes or other solutions using modern AI technologies.
• An understanding of large language models (LLMs), AI APIs and how to apply them to real business problems.
• Strong data fundamentals and an appreciation of how data quality, structure and accessibility affect the success of AI solutions.
• The ability to assess a business problem, identify a potential technical solution and work out how to deliver it in practice.
• An interest in AI strategy and technical decision-making, including evaluating tools, platforms and approaches and helping establish a roadmap.
• A proactive, hands-on mindset and the confidence to take an idea forward without needing every step defined in advance.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate with both technical colleagues and non-technical stakeholders.

Experience taking AI solutions beyond experimentation and into production would be particularly valuable. Familiarity with cloud-based AI services, Microsoft technologies, Python, AI agents, RAG or workflow automation would also be beneficial.

We're open to different backgrounds. You might be an AI Engineer with a strong interest in product and business problems, a Data Engineer who has moved into applied AI, or a Software Engineer who enjoys exploring how AI can solve operational challenges.
