Job description

MAX IV operates two storage rings and a linear accelerator to produce synchrotron radiation. Its largest accelerator, the 3 GeV electron storage ring, was the first in the world to use a multi-bend-achromat lattice, enabling ultrahigh-brightness light with extremely low emittance. Only a few such next-generation storage rings exist today, though many facilities worldwide are now upgrading in this direction.

To stay at the forefront, MAX IV is designing a major upgrade of the 3 GeV ring, called MAX 4 U , aiming to deliver outstanding improvements in lightsource performance. This includes the development of innovative magnet and RF systems.

MAX IV is looking for an Electromagnetic Systems Engineer/Physicist to contribute to the development of new electromagnetic systems for MAX IV and MAX 4 U , with the opportunity to gradually take on increased technical responsibility for key accelerator components.

Your team

You will be working in the Accelerator Development group consisting of a wide variety of experts within the accelerator field, including accelerator physicists, high –frequency structure and magnet experts, and laser experts. The Accelerator Development team is a part of MAX IV Accelerator Division, which is responsible for developing and operating all accelerator-based light sources at MAX IV. This division is also charged with carrying out the major accelerator upgrade in the MAX 4 U project.

About the role

Electromagnetic systems are essential to the performance and development of the MAX IV accelerators. Their reliability and precision are key to stable operation and high-quality light delivery to our users. As part of MAX 4 U , several advanced accelerator systems will be developed and commissioned. We are therefore looking for an Electromagnetic Systems Engineer/Physicist who will play a key role in these developments while strengthening MAX IV’s in-house expertise and supporting our existing accelerator systems.

Your main work tasks will be
  • Design, development, testing, and commissioning of advanced electromagnetic systems for MAX IV and MAX 4 U , such as:
    • RF electron guns
    • DC and AC magnets
    • RF-based structures
  • Contribute to the technical responsibility for electromagnetic accelerator subsystems.
  • Preserve and strengthen in-house expertise in electromagnetic systems.
  • Support the operation of the MAX IV accelerator systems.
To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications
  • University degree in Engineering or Physics or equivalent.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.
Below are seen as merits
  • Experience with electromagnetic design and simulation tools such as CST studio, COMSOL, GdfidL or FEMM.
  • Previous experience in design of electromagnetic systems for particle accelerators such as:
    • RF electron guns
    • DC and AC magnets
    • RF based structures
  • Experience working with particle accelerators.

As a person you are collaborative and comfortable working as part of a team, while also being able to work independently and take initiative. You are curious, eager to learn, and have a genuine interest in technology.
