MAX IV Laboratory in Lund is seeking a post-doctoral fellow with a strong interest in materials for sustainability to participate in the construction of the TomoWISE tomography beamline and its initial scientific program, with the possibility of early commissioning in 2028.

The successful candidate will carry out an independent research project, collaborate with current and future users, and contribute to developing tomography imaging methodologies while engaging with the beamline team.

Qualifications

  • PhD in a STEM field.
  • Experience in materials science research or tomography method development with interest in sustainability materials.
  • Experience with experimental research, microscopy and imaging, preferably using X-rays.
  • Proven ability to develop research projects from proposal to publication.
  • Experience presenting at conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Fluency in English – spoken and written.

Your team

MAX IV is building TomoWISE, a new tomography beamline dedicated to advancing materials science for sustainability. To complete this project, we are forming a specialised team to develop the beamline into a fully operational facility.

As part of this team, which now includes a Beamline Lead Scientist, a Research Engineer and a Data Scientist, you will collaborate closely with experts across the Technical and Science divisions to plan, install, and commission advanced infrastructure and equipment. You will contribute to developing and maintaining tomographic imaging methodologies and supporting future beamline users. The project is led by the TomoWISE Beamline Lead Scientist, and the team will be part of the Beamline Office Group within the Science Division for the duration of the project.

MAX IV is looking for a post-doc with a strong interest in research on materials for sustainability, enthusiasm for advancing materials science research using tomographic imaging, and a strong commitment to serving the scientific community. The successful candidate will have the unique opportunity to participate and contribute to the construction of a new beamline and be part of its initial scientific program with the possibility of early commissioning of the large beam option in 2028. Alongside contributing to the beamline project and preparing for its future capabilities, the candidate is expected to carry out an independent research project, preferably within collaborations with present and future users of MAX IV.

Your main work tasks will be

  • Contribute to the installation and commissioning of beamline instrumentation, including optics, sample stages, and detectors.
  • Contribute to the implementation of relevant software for tomographic reconstruction and image analysis, in collaboration with the beamline team and other internal resources.

To be successful in this role you need to have the following qualifications

  • PhD in a STEM field.
  • Experience in materials science research, or in tomography method development, with a genuine scientific interest in a materials science domain (e.g., structural materials, energy materials, geology, functional materials for sustainability).
  • Experience with experimental research, with a focus on microscopy and imaging, preferably using X-rays. This includes hands-on work with instrumentation, commissioning, and data acquisition/analysis.
  • Proven ability to develop research projects from proposal to publication, with a collaborative approach.
  • Experience presenting at conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Fluency in English – spoken and written.

You have proven ability to handle complex system integration and to coordinate effectively with support groups, working as part of a multidisciplinary team where contributions from technical and scientific staff across divisions are essential to progress, is an asset.

Appointment to the position of postdoc requires that the applicant has a PhD or an international degree deemed equivalent to a PhD, within the subject of the position, completed no more than three years before the application deadline. Under special circumstances the PhD can have been completed previous to the aforementioned three years.

Further information

This is a full-time, fixed-term employment. A postdoctoral fellow is employed under a period

of at least two years and at most three years. The period of employment is determined in accordance with the agreement “Avtal om tidsbegränsad anställning som postdoktor-2022-02-01” ("Agreement on fixed-term employment as a post-doctoral fellow, 2022-02-01").
