Job summary

Job description

The Telehandler Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a telescopic handler to lift, transport, and place materials, equipment, and loads across the worksite, including rough or uneven terrain. The role requires precise load handling at height and extended reach, strict adherence to lift plans and load charts, and full compliance with site HSE and lifting operation procedures

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate the telehandler safely to lift, carry, and place materials (pallets, pipes, equipment, containers, and other loads) at height and extended reach, in accordance with manufacturer specifications and site lift procedures.
  • Conduct pre-use inspections of the telehandler (visual, mechanical, and functional checks) and report defects or unsafe conditions immediately; complete daily inspection checklists/logbooks.
  • Read and apply load charts correctly, calculating safe working load relative to boom angle, extension, and radius before every lift.
  • Assess ground conditions, terrain, and stability requirements before positioning the machine, including use of outriggers/stabilizers where fitted.
  • Coordinate with banksmen/signalers, riggers, and ground personnel using standard hand signals or radio communication during lifting operations.
  • Follow approved lift plans for non-routine or complex lifts, and elevate to supervision when a lift falls outside standard operating limits.
  • Maintain safe exclusion zones and ensure no personnel are positioned under a suspended or raised load.
  • Use only certified attachments (forks, buckets, jibs, man-baskets) appropriate to the task, and never exceed rated capacity.
  • Carry out basic operator-level maintenance (fluid checks, tire condition, greasing) and report equipment faults for maintenance follow-up.
  • Maintain accurate records of operating hours, inspections, and incidents as required by site procedures.
  • Comply with all HSE policies, PPE requirements, and permit-to-work procedures relevant to lifting and material handling operations.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, safety briefings, and training relevant to telehandler operations.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of demonstrated experience operating telehandlers in a construction, industrial, or rig-site environment.
  • Experience operating on rough or unpaved terrain and in outdoor/site conditions is required.
  • Experience working alongside riggers/banksmen and following formal lift plans is preferred.
  • Strong spatial awareness and precision in load placement at height and extended reach.
  • Sound understanding of load charts, stability principles, and safe working load calculations.
  • High attention to safety, situational awareness, and risk identification.
  • Clear communication skills for coordination with ground crew and signalers.
  • Ability to remain calm and methodical under time or site pressure.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for pre-use checks and fault reporting.
