The company is founder-led, profitable, and growing. We are hiring a Senior Site Reliability / Gitops Engineer for our Information Systems (IS) team. This role is ideal for an automation-focused senior technologist passionate about Linux, looking to build a career with Canonical and contribute to the success of Ubuntu and open source products.

Job Summary

The IS team supports and maintains all of Canonical's IT production services, serving over 60 million Ubuntu users. As a Senior SRE & Gitops Engineer, you will drive operations automation in both private and public clouds, utilizing open source infrastructure as code tools, CI/CD practices, and Canonical's automation products. You will also provide feedback to developers on product operation at scale, contribute to design and implementation, and collaborate with global teams to deliver excellent services.

Responsibilities

  • Lead automation and Gitops development as an embedded tech lead.
  • Collaborate with IS architect to align solutions with architecture vision.
  • Design and develop services as product offerings.
  • Implement infrastructure as code, increasing automation and process improvements.
  • Automate software operations across distributed systems in private and public clouds.
  • Maintain responsibility for core services, networks, and infrastructure.
  • Develop troubleshooting, capacity planning, and performance monitoring skills, using tools like Prometheus, Grafana, Elasticsearch.
  • Support and collaborate with globally distributed engineering, operations, and support teams.
  • Focus on larger projects and automation during dedicated development time.
  • Share expertise through design sessions, mentorship, and collaborative work.
  • Handle time-critical escalations responsibly.

Qualifications

  • Modern understanding of hosting architecture driven by infrastructure as code.
  • Product mindset focused on developing products, not just solutions.
  • Experience in Python software development, especially large projects.
  • Experience with Kubernetes or similar container orchestration systems.
  • Proven ability to manage and deploy cloud infrastructure with code.
  • Practical Linux networking, routing, and firewall knowledge.
  • Experience with Linux storage solutions like Ceph or databases.
  • Hands-on Linux server administration experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of cloud computing concepts and technologies.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science or related field.
  • Effective communication skills in English across various mediums.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills, kernel to web, with willingness to seek help when needed.
  • Flexible, quick learner, motivated by dynamic environments.
  • Comfortable working in distributed teams.
  • Passionate about open source, especially Ubuntu or Debian.
