Our Faculty of Theology invites applications for the

Professorship of Theological Ethics (W2)

to be filled by the earliest possible starting date.

Your responsibilities

You will represent the subject of Theological Ethics at the Faculty in both research and teaching, while also considering knowledge transfer. Your focus is on moral theology and you will cooperate closely with the experts in Christian social ethics. You will contribute to the University’s scientific profile through excellent research achievements (also in the form of publications and peer-reviewed third-party funding). You should be open to interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary collaboration within and beyond the field of theology, particularly by participating in key research initiatives such as the KU Center for Religion, Church, and Society in Transformation (ZRKG). In addition, you will actively support the University's Third Mission strategy, cooperate with other subjects and universities as well as with non-university partners. You will offer high-quality and innovative teaching in all degree programs of the Faculty of Theology. Your teaching portfolio will include courses taught in English and those available to students from other faculties of the University. Supervising students and postgraduates is an integral part of your role at the Faculty, in which you will participate with professional and intercultural competence. You will apply your expertise locally as well as in international contexts. Furthermore, you will assume responsibilities in academic self-administration and the constructive further development of the Faculty’s academic profile, degree programs, and networking.

Skills/Qualifications

The requirements for employment are based on Art. 57 para. 1 Bavarian Higher Education Innovation Act ( BayHIG ) and include, in addition to the general requirements of the position under employment law, at least a completed university degree in Catholic Theology ( Diplom or Magister or equivalent degree), pedagogical skills, the special aptitude for scientific work, typically evidenced by the quality of a doctorate in Catholic Theology (Dr. Theol.), as well as additional independent scientific achievements in the subject of theological ethics with a focus on moral theology. These can be demonstrated by a habilitation, a junior professorship or through equivalent scientific achievements, which can also be achieved outside the university sector. Managing a junior research group constitutes an equivalent scientific achievement under the conditions specified in Art. 98 para. 10 s. 5 BayHIG.

Further requirements include appropriate research expertise in the field of theological ethics with a focus on moral theology, as evidenced by relevant publications in peer-reviewed journals or in books and monographs with renowned publishers. Subject-related teaching skills and didactic aptitude are also expected (evidenced by previous university-level teaching experience, positive teaching evaluations, university didactics certificates and/or teaching awards) as well as a good knowledge of German and English to be able to offer courses in these languages. Applicants can also demonstrate experience and success in acquiring peer-reviewed third-party funding as well as close national and preferably international networks with other universities or non-university partners. In addition, interdisciplinary qualifications (e.g. leadership skills, high social competence, participation in interdisciplinary qualification and networking opportunities, role model function) as well as experience in the management of committees are expected.

The KU pursues a policy of intensive student mentoring and therefore expects its teaching staff to spend an appropriate amount of time on campus.

When appointed as a civil servant, the successful candidate must not be older than 52 years of age at the time of appointment.

For a professorship appointment, the ecclesiastical Nihil obstat is required according to Concordat regulations.
