Student Assistant "Optimization of Hybrid Concentrated Solar Power Plants"

Join to apply for the Student Assistant "Optimization of Hybrid Concentrated Solar Power Plants" role at Fraunhofer-Institut für Solare Energiesysteme ISE

Our institute in Freiburg is Europe's largest solar research center with about 1,400 employees. We focus on sustainable, economical, secure, and socially equitable energy systems based on renewable sources. Our research covers energy provision, distribution, storage, and utilization, contributing to the global energy transition through innovative projects and collaborations.

We invite motivated students to contribute to our research group "Concentrating Systems and Technologies," which explores the next generation of CSP hybridization. This environmentally friendly power generation method is especially relevant in regions with high direct sunlight. Hybridization aims to improve cost efficiency and reliability by combining renewable sources or storage with solar technology, using software simulations to optimize system performance.

What You Will Do

  • Support the development of our software ColSimCSP for designing and simulating hybrid concentrating solar systems.
  • Expand and improve software models for hybrid power plants and their components.
  • Evaluate simulation results and validate your implementations.
  • Conduct techno-economic optimization studies for publications.
  • Work with object-oriented programming languages (C++/Python) and document your code thoroughly.

What You Bring To The Table

  • Studying computer science, physics, engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience in programming (Python) and multi-objective optimization projects.
  • Interest in machine learning, neural networks, and renewable energy technologies.
  • Excellent command of English.
  • A desire to creatively apply and expand your knowledge during your studies.
  • Potential interest in a follow-up bachelor or master thesis.
  • Ability to work dynamically, independently, and collaboratively.
  • Creative mindset with ideas for improvement.

What You Can Expect

  • Insight into research and development at a leading institute.
  • Combination of experimental and theoretical work.
  • Guidance and feedback from scientists.
  • Teamwork experience with scientific and student staff.
  • Flexible working hours and occasional remote work.
  • Promotion of diversity and equal opportunity.
  • Social events and staff celebrations.

The position offers a monthly remuneration based on your educational level, with a workload of 30-80 hours per month. We welcome applications from all backgrounds and prioritize equal opportunities, especially for severely disabled applicants.
