for the area of

Lecturers at the University of Bremen work scientifically in their research area with a focus on teaching. They are independent in research and teaching in accordance with the Bremen Higher Education Law (§24 Abs. 1).

The Faculty of Geosciences at the University of Bremen is an internationally established research and teaching institution. It covers the entire spectrum of modern geosciences, offers five application- and research-focused and internationally oriented degree programmes (B.Sc. and M.Sc.) and maintains close scientific cooperation with non-university research institutions. Together with the Research Faculty MARUM - Centre for Marine Environmental Sciences, Bremen is a leading international research location in the field of marine sciences. As part of the reorientation of the Engineering Geology area, we are looking for a person (f/m/d) who can develop an independent teaching and research profile in the field of engineering geology (soil mechanics, hydrogeological characterisation of the subsurface, etc.). Equipment and infrastructure, including a large geotechnical laboratory and in-situ measuring equipment for field work and expeditions, will be provided.

Your Responsibilities

  • Conception and implementation of research-based courses in the B.Sc. degree programmes (Geosciences; Marine Geosciences) and M.Sc. degree programmes (Applied Geosciences; Marine Geosciences; Materials Chemistry and Mineralogy) of the FB05 as well as in the cooperative study programme B.Sc. Natural Sciences for Sustainability.
  • Teaching responsibilities are based on the Teaching Obligations and Proof of Teaching Ordinance and currently amount to 12 hours per semester week.
  • Organisation and design of modules as well as module responsibility for the various study programmes (e.g., Methods of Hydro- and Engineering Geology in the B.Sc. Geosciences, Engineering Geology / Geotechnics - Fields of Science and Engineering Design in the M.Sc. Applied Geosciences, Energy I and II in the B.S.c Natural Sciences for Sustainability).
  • Conducting examinations, in particular the supervision of B.Sc. and M.Sc. theses in the various degree programmes mentioned above.
  • Organisation of field courses in the fields of engineering geology, applied geology, geotechnics, soil mechanics and hydrogeology, including sampling and in-situ measurements.
  • Conducting laboratory practical in the soil mechanics and geotechnical laboratories of the Faculty and MARUM.
  • Continued development of quality assurance and evaluation of engineering geoscience teaching.
  • Use and development of existing geotechnical equipment for the investigation of sediment deformation under static and cyclic loading.
  • Conducting applied research projects on the mechanical properties of soils and marine sediments for the purpose of foundation design.
  • Leading or participating in ship expeditions in the North Sea, Baltic Sea and other coastal regions to investigate geological engineering topics such as siltation of estuaries, stability of marine infrastructures such as offshore wind farms and harbours.
  • Willingness to take on tasks in the area of academic self-administration, such as participation in university committees, is expected.
  • A completed scientific university degree Dipl.-Ing., M.Sc. (FH or Univ.) in the field of engineering geology, (applied) geosciences, geotechnics or a comparable related discipline as well as a completed, relevant, outstanding doctorate.
  • Several years of professional experience in one of the above-mentioned fields.
  • Proven, relevant teaching experience at a university or higher education institution in the advertised field of work.
  • Teamwork skills and willingness to plan and lead courses in the B.Sc. and M.Sc. programmes.
  • A high degree of personal reliability, sense of responsibility, commitment and willingness to cooperate with other teaching staff in the above-mentioned subjects.
  • Good to very good knowledge of written and spoken German and English. Teaching will be in German and English.

To be eligible for entry into pay group 14 TV-L, you must have completed your doctorate and have several years of relevant professional experience in teaching and research after completing your doctorate.
