Staff Scientist at Humboldt University of Berlin

The position is part of the Franco-German project PuMMAVi ("Pumping, Measuring and Modeling Atomic Vibrations in the Electron Microscope", DFG project number 530143441). In this part of the project, optical phonons in gallium nitride nanowires are to be excited using long-wavelength infrared photons inside a transmission electron microscope (Nion HERMES) to investigate their thermalization and defect scattering, among other things. For this purpose, electron energy loss spectroscopy with less than 10 meV energy resolution is used to investigate the photon-pumped systems spectroscopically by means of electrons. The position focuses on conducting the experiments and analyzing data, the laser injection system is developed in advance. The project will be supported on the French side with the production of the nanowire samples (Dr. Bruno Daudin, CEA Grenoble) and accompanying simulations (Dr. Guillaume Radtke, Sorbonne) and close collaboration with these project parts is expected.

Responsibilities

  • Scientific service in research within the DFG project PuMMAVi.
  • High-resolution spectro-microscopy experiments of optically pumped phonons in a modern transmission electron microscope (Nion HERMES) using a laser injection system developed for the project, in collaboration with accompanying simulations by the project partner.

Qualifications

  • Completed scientific university education and PhD (if applicable) in physics or a related discipline.
  • Experience with experiments and evaluation of ultra-high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy in scanning transmission electron microscopy, ideally in the field of phonon spectroscopy.
  • Basic skills needed in physics research (excellent written and oral expression in English, able to work in a team, data and lab note management, etc.).
  • Experience in the following areas is desirable:
    • Python-based programming for the purpose of data analysis and control/automation of experiments.
    • Laser optics, especially in the domain of long-wavelength infrared.
