We are a university with a focus on engineering and natural sciences as well as economics, human sciences and medicine. We offer excellent study and working conditions to 13,000 students from Germany and abroad as well as approx. 3,000 employees.

The aim of the Magdeburg Research Center for Dynamic Systems is to gain a basic understanding of complex dynamic systems, e.g., in chemical production systems and energy conversion processes. This understanding can be used for the optimisation of systems or for the development of new processes and active substances.

In this context, the Chairs of Mechanical Process Engineering and Engineering Thermodynamics are looking for two motivated and curious research assistants/PhD researchers to join our teams. You will design and conduct experiments using state-of-the-art measurement techniques such as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV), tailored to track and analyze complex-shaped particles. Your findings will feed directly into the development of new physical models that help predict particle behavior of such complex particles in flows, and ultimately contribute to the design of next-generation industrial processes, such as separators and classifiers.

The research assistants have the opportunity to write a PhD thesis based on this work.

Your Primary Responsibilities

  • Planning and designing of experimental setups to enable measurements in particle-laden turbulent flows.
  • Implementation of cutting-edge optical and laser diagnostics techniques to measure the behavior of particles in turbulent flows, such as PIV/PTV methods.
  • Processing and interpretation of the experimental data.
  • Documentation of the results, preparation of the project reports, and publications.
  • Communication and collaboration with other scientists in the group and in the research initiative.

Requirements Profile

  • MSc degree (or equivalent) in mechanical engineering, process engineering, aeronautical engineering, physics or a related discipline.
  • Track record in knowledge in fluid mechanics.
  • A strong interest in carrying out experimental work, especially optical and laser diagnostics.
  • Basic coding skills and image processing experience are desirable.
  • Fluent command of written and spoken English is required.
