The Helmholtz Institute HI-TRON in Mainz is a collaboration of the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) with the Johannes Gutenberg-University (JGU), the University Medicine Mainz (UM Mainz) and the non-profit TRON gGmbH (TRON). The aim of the partnership is to develop pioneering immunotherapies and identify new biomarkers for the effectiveness of the treatment.

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Staff Scientist with a strong background in advanced imaging techniques, including confocal microscopy, live-cell imaging, Coherent Raman Scattering (CRS), and two-photon microscopy.

The successful candidate will join the HI-TRON Cellular Phenotyping Platform where he / she will play a key role in supporting and advancing imaging-based research across the research divisions of HI-TRON. This position involves working with state-of-the-art imaging platforms to drive innovation in cancer research, immunology, and molecular biology.

Your Tasks

  • Ensure the operation and maintenance of advanced microscopy systems for confocal, live-cell, and in vivo imaging
  • Develop, optimize, and implement imaging workflows for 2D and 3D imaging of fixed and live specimens
  • Train and support researchers in experimental design, image acquisition, and data analysis to ensure high-quality data acquisition and interpretation of results
  • Stay current with emerging imaging technologies, image analysis tools and best practices in advanced microscopy
  • Assist with platform management, user coordination, and technical documentation

Your Profile

  • PhD in life sciences, biomedical engineering, biophysics, or a related discipline, with proven expertise in advanced microscopy
  • Experience in an imaging facility would be considered a strong asset
  • Demonstrated experience with fluorescence microscopy techniques (e.g., confocal, two-photon) and CRS imaging systems or related imaging technologies
  • Strong background in quantitative image analysis software such as FIJI / ImageJ, Imaris or similar platforms
  • Research experience in cancer biology, immunology, or molecular biology is strongly preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to train users at different expertise levels and collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams
  • Proficient in laboratory management practices, including equipment maintenance
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English; German language skills are not required but would be considered an asset
