(Senior) Engineer, IRIS2 Ground Operations 5G and Networking
IRIS2 is the new European Union secure satellite constellation, designed to provide secure connectivity and enhanced communication capacities across the EU. SES, in partnership with other consortium members, was selected by the European Commission to build and operate this multi-orbit satellite system.
The project is entering its next phase, requiring support in service provisioning and product development for IRIS2.
Role Description
You will be part of an agile team, responsible for designing and documenting the ground segment architecture and operational processes for IRIS2’s multi-orbit (LEO/MEO) satellite service. This includes coordinating across gateways, terrestrial networks, and assurance operations to ensure integrated ground operations.
Effective collaboration with SES internal departments, consortium partners, and the customer is essential, along with agile documentation practices.
Primary Responsibilities
Ground Segment Design & Documentation
- Develop operational plans for gateways, earth stations, 5G Core Network, and supporting infrastructure, aligning with IRIS2 requirements.
- Document architectural components, design decisions, CONOPS, and technical standards.
Networking & Connectivity Engineering
- Understand terrestrial network architectures, interconnection points, terminal authentication, and routing policies.
- Work with stakeholders to specify quality, redundancy, and scalability requirements for LEO/MEO connectivity.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Coordinate with engineering, operations, and product teams to gather input and align on design decisions.
- Validate ground infrastructure requirements with satellite engineering leads.
Technical Standards & Compliance
- Support specifications ensuring adherence to industry standards, security, and regulations.
- Propose best practices for reliable, automated operations.
Continuous Improvement & Innovation
- Monitor industry trends and emerging technologies, recommending advancements.
- Conduct feasibility studies or proof-of-concept initiatives.
Documentation
- Produce comprehensive internal and customer-facing documentation and guidelines.

Qualifications, Background, and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, RF Engineering, Telecommunications, or related field.
- At least 3 years of relevant experience in satellite communications, systems engineering, or operations.
- Hands-on RF measurement and ground station verification experience.
- Experience with high-availability satellite or telecommunications systems.
- Knowledge of VSAT, gateway antennas, and MEO/LEO satellite technologies.
- Proficiency in MS Office, AutoCAD, and Excel VBA.
- Fluency in English; additional languages are a plus.
Other Key Requirements
- Eligibility for a “SECRET” security clearance or equivalent.
- Willingness to work at least 60% onsite.
- Willingness to travel for project needs.
