Pharmacy Technician Job Description

The pharmacy technician is responsible for supporting pharmacy operations, ensuring compliance with laws and regulations, and providing excellent customer service. The role involves administrative duties, supervising pharmacy staff, and assisting pharmacists in delivering healthcare services.

Responsibilities

  1. Non-Clinical Operations: Perform daily pharmacy operations, manage workflow, and serve as a full-time certified pharmacy technician.
  2. System Operations: Operate pharmacy systems, process prescriptions, and assist with healthcare services under pharmacist supervision.
  3. Personnel Management: Lead training, coaching, and performance management of pharmacy technicians, including disciplinary actions.

Customer Experience

  1. Engage with customers and patients, resolve complaints, and answer questions to ensure a positive experience.
  2. Build relationships with customers, anticipate needs, and promote healthcare services.

Operations

  1. Assist pharmacists in patient care activities, including prescription processing and health screenings.
  2. Delegate and assign non-clinical work, ensure tasks are completed timely, and maintain pharmacy standards.
  3. Prepare reports, manage inventory, and ensure compliance with policies and laws.
  4. Oversee pharmacy workflow, maintain equipment, and support security measures.
  5. Handle insurance claims, support financial and operational improvements, and coordinate community outreach.

People & Performance Management

  1. Manage technician performance, conduct hiring, onboarding, and training.
  2. Ensure licensure and certification compliance among team members.

Training & Development

  1. Maintain PTCB certification and pursue ongoing education and training.
  2. Seek professional growth through feedback and mentorship.

Communication

  1. Maintain effective communication within the pharmacy team and participate in meetings.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • PTCB or ExCPT certification (except in Puerto Rico).
  • At least one year of experience as a pharmacy technician in retail or hospital settings.
  • Fluent in English (reading, writing, speaking).
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
