About The Role

Harman Research is seeking a talented and motivated Software / Data Collection Engineer. Harman Research is the corporate research division that focuses on advanced technology development for applications across all Harman product lines including Automotive, Lifestyle (consumer), and Professional. You will work with a variety of advanced real-time data collection platforms, including consumer hardware rigs, simulators and vehicles which involves acquiring images, videos, ECG, EEG and other signals to support the Machine Learning for our next generation human-to-machine interfaces.

This position will be located in Garching, Germany where the successful candidate will have access to world class tools and facilities.

What You Will Do

• Participate in a project to collect variety of human-related data, including by not limited to neurophysiological data, biosignals and user experience data in labs and rigs located all over the world.
• Actively participate, including doing incident analysis and improvements with extremely short feedback loops, in running advanced research-level hardware, software and processes, including preparation of subjects to near medical-grade routines, dealing with relevant hardware like ECG and EEG, and other on-body and environmental sensors.
• Provide monitoring of the data collection process and data transfer to cloud storages and computing nodes (the total number of rigs and labs is up to 10, more than 150 experiments per week, each experiment is 1 TB).
• Detect failures in the operation of physical/virtual/cloud resources, network equipment, operating systems, software applications and various hardware.
• Create defect reports and escalate to software development and research teams.
• Solve incidents, and participate in project development activities.
• Do advanced scripting for the sake of issue and incident analysis as well as more advanced ones to support new sensors and basic analytics for them.
• Resolve outages based on defined processes and product knowledge.
• Provide technical support and guidance to data collection operators.
  
  

What You Need

• Bachelor Degree in Computer Science or similar
• 2+ in IT industry, preferably in the areas adjacent to medicine and/or human-centric research
• Experience working with and troubleshooting a variety of communication technologies: ethernet/WiFi/internet, USB, UART, Bluetooth/BLE
• Experience with research- and medical-grade hardware for capturing biosignals, e.g. ECG, EEG, GSR, PPG, cameras (including IR ones and cameras with artificial lighting), radars and similar
• Experience of working with people as data collection subjects, including understanding of related typical challenges
• Experience of working as a support engineer
• Strong skills in Linux/Windows administration
• Experience in scripting languages (shell, Python)
• Experience in monitoring systems (Zabbix, Grafana and similar)
• Basic mechanical and electrical engineering skills, experience in maintaining respected aspects of complex hardware systems
• Knowledge of AWS Cloud, Docker is big plus
• Hands on experience in basic CAD design and 3D printing
• Strong English skills as you will be operating in a multinational environment
• Great communication skills, ability to explain complex concepts to the individuals with a very different background (e.g. essence of data collection to subjects, technical matters to operators, challenges of dealing with subjects to experts in research and data collection planning, etc)
