Senior Optical Systems Engineer

Munich, Germany

As part of Infinera's Optical Architecture Group, you will have a unique opportunity to contribute to the design and architecture of highly-advanced optical transport systems based on disruptive digital signal processing and photonic integration technology. You will be responsible for successfully implementing new optical hardware and software features in collaboration with Systems Engineering and Software Development teams.

Additionally, you will have the opportunity to study and analyze transmission performance of the world's most advanced commercial optical transponders and Infinera's flexible grid, C-band, SuperC-band and C+L band line system platforms.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Designing and validating link-level control algorithms and optical performance monitoring to optimize end-to-end optical performance.
  • Analyzing and simulating optical line card performance and optimizing tradeoffs based on system design goals/metrics.
  • Developing key specifications and baseline designs for new optical line system cards including optical amplifiers, ROADMs and optical multiplexers.
  • Owning the detailed hardware and software design documentation used by development, test and field teams. Reviewing with multi-site engineering teams.
  • Supporting experimental analysis of component/module capabilities and technological feasibility of new platforms.
  • Investigating transmission characteristics of Infinera’s long haul flex-grid line systems including signal power/OSNR evolution and fiber nonlinearities.
  • Analyzing the impact of optical impairments (including chromatic dispersion, PDL, polarization transients, filtering, crosstalk, nonlinearities) on transmission of advanced coherent modulation formats.
  • Developing system design rules and performance models.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

  • Hands-on experience with DWDM transmission systems including coherent transponders, EDFAs, Raman amplifiers and ROADMs.
  • Knowledge of advanced coherent modulation formats including practical experience with their transmission in long haul systems.
  • Experience with automated data acquisition and analysis using high-speed electro-optic test and measurement equipment.
  • Experience with long haul optical link design including power budgets, OSNR calculations, and transmission penalties.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Excellent programming, analytical and troubleshooting skills.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python or Matlab.
  • Highly motivated team player adept at cross-functional interaction.

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • Masters or PhD in Optics/Engineering/Physics with some industry experience. We also welcome applications from candidates who have completed their studies and not yet worked in industry.
