Position: Academic staff member (PhD Candidate)

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is one of the largest universities in Germany, located in the Rhine-Main science region, fostering multidisciplinary research and teaching. Its campus is close to Mainz city center, creating a vibrant academic environment.

The research focus of the “Political Anthropology” section intersects Political and Feminist Anthropology, Indian Ocean, and Swahili Studies, with regional emphasis on Eastern Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Swahili-speaking diaspora.   • Develop and implement a research project (aiming for a doctorate)
  • Obtain scientific qualification (PhD)
  • Teach basic courses (2 semester hours/week)
  • Support grant applications
  • Participate in examinations and committee work
  • Support the section “Political Anthropology”

Applicants must meet public service law requirements and the recruitment criteria in § 57 of the Hochschulgesetz of Rhineland-Palatinate.

  • Completed university degree (BA and MA), preferably in Social Anthropology/Ethnology
  • Excellent ethnographic and empirical methods knowledge
  • Teaching experience in higher education (advantageous)
  • Experience in publishing research
  • Proficiency in German and English
  • Swahili language skills or regional knowledge of Eastern Africa (desired)
