indie is empowering the automotive revolution with next generation automotive semiconductors and software platforms. We focus on edge sensors spanning multiple modalities including LiDAR, radar, ultrasound and vision for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), autonomous vehicles, connected car, user experience and electrification applications.

The Functional Safety Manager (FSM) at indie will be a key leader in our automotive safety culture, reporting to the Director of FuSa and Cybersecurity. As the FSM, you will lead development and application teams to assess functional safety requirements and contribute to product development, ensuring functional safety is achieved. This role provides independent oversight and drives project teams to meet functional safety requirements while ensuring indie's product development and manufacturing align with applicable safety standards. You will also represent indie to customers.

Job Responsibilities

  • Lead engineers and external stakeholders involved in program and project work.
  • Act as gatekeeper at each lifecycle phase.
  • Coordinate with the Customer FuSa team/counterparts on FuSa topics and planning aspects (e.g., DIA).
  • Audit and assess functional safety work products for assigned projects.
  • Develop, tailor, and maintain safety plans, and manage FuSa activities to ensure work products are delivered on time with the necessary quality.
  • Schedule and conduct confirmation reviews defined within the safety plan.
  • Plan and execute functional safety assessments with the program/project manager.
  • Communicate clearly and transparently the status of FuSa work products, risk analysis, and mitigations to project management and higher management when requested.
  • Manage third-party audits and assessments (e.g., external assessments from TUEV).
  • Ensure adherence to the safety plan.
  • Review and monitor critical technical FuSa work products (e.g., Technical Safety Concept, Safety Analysis) with Functional Safety Engineers (FSEs) for completeness and correctness.
  • Evaluate customer safety systems to determine appropriate safety architecture.
  • Provide training to engineering teams on functional safety.

Main Requirements

  • BS/MS in Natural Science, Applied Physics, Electrical, Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial Engineering.
  • 5+ years of experience in the semiconductor industry (e.g., design, test, quality).
  • 5+ years of experience working with ISO 26262, with strong knowledge of functional safety theory and hands-on experience.
  • Strong manufacturing, quality engineering, and data analysis skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Customer-oriented mindset with strong skills in documentation and requirements management systems (e.g., JAMA).
  • Deep understanding of Functional Safety Standard ISO 26262 and Automotive Engineering principles.
  • Experience creating safety documents (e.g., Safety Case, DFMEA, MSR-FMEA, FMEDA, FTA, DFA).

Additional Qualifications

  • ISO 26262 Certification (FuSa Professional Certification, FSSP, is a plus).
  • Experience with Requirements Management tools (JAMA experience is a plus).
  • Experience with Safety Analysis Tools (e.g., Ansys Medini Analyze is a plus).
  • Knowledge of the Product Development Life Cycle, including Systems, Hardware (Electrical/Electronics/Semiconductor), and Software Development.
  • Strong technical leadership, planning, and organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to find creative solutions.
  • Experience with automotive requirements (e.g., AEC, FMEA, Control Plan, PPAP, IATF 16949, VDA 6.3 is a plus).
  • Domestic and international travel will be required.
  • Fluency in English, both written and spoken, is required.

  • Germany (Munich preferred, Nuremberg also considered)
