We are seeking a Space Software Systems Engineer to join our team at ESOC’s premises in Darmstadt, Germany.

In this role, you will contribute to Space Weather Space Segment Engineering, supporting ESA in developing work specifications for space segment activities (including satellites and ground segments). You will assist in the preparation of upcoming instrument and satellite mission studies and procurements, providing expert system support throughout all project phases.

About the client and location

The European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) is the European Space Agency’s (ESA) base in Darmstadt, Germany. As the main control centre for ESA, ESOC controls the launch and early orbit phases for their missions. They are also accepted globally for their research into ground system engineering, satellite navigation, space debris studies and more.

Tasks and activities

The scope of work will include:

  • Support ESA in preparing work specifications for space segment activities, including satellites and ground segments.
  • Assist in the preparation of instrument and satellite mission studies and procurements.
  • Provide system expertise for the preparation of space activities across all phases.
  • Actively participate in all project reviews.
  • Focus on procurement activities, including defining, establishing, managing, monitoring, and maintaining system and interface requirements.
  • Support activities related to system aspects and ensure alignment with project objectives.
  • Review deliverables from industrial activities and provide feedback.
  • Assist in subsequent activities arising from system-related reviews and assessments.

Skills and experience

The following skills and experience are mandatory:

  • University Degree (PhD) or equivalent in Physics or Engineering, or a relevant field.
  • At least 5 years proven experience covering the domain of space instrumentation.
  • Practical experience in implementing space weather instruments in space missions, instrument performance simulations, and tests.
  • Good knowledge of at least one programming language, preferably python or C/C++.
  • Experience in space system engineering and related ESA standards.
  • Experience in participating in international projects with a clearly defined responsibility area.
  • Desire to work both autonomously and as part of a team, in an international multicultural environment.
  • Solution-oriented mindset, with customer-focused communication skills.
  • Fluent in English, both written and spoken.
