Analyst (m/f/d) Chinese Science, Technology and Innovation

Since its foundation in 2013, the Mercator Institute of China Studies (MERICS) has established itself as the leading European think tank on China. Employing more than 35 full-time staff from all over Europe, MERICS is currently the largest European institute focusing solely on analysing contemporary China. With its headquarters in Berlin and an office in Brussels, the institute is regularly at the forefront of European and international public and expert debates on China.

MERICS has an established track record in analysing China’s science, technology and innovation ecosystem. Our research focuses on strategic technology areas such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors and biotechnology, as well as cross-border data transfers, knowledge security, China’s military-civil fusion program and the US-China tech war. To complement the team, MERICS seeks to fill the following position:

Chinese Science, Technology and Innovation
as soon as possible. In this role, you will be part of the Science, Technology and Innovation team, working closely with the Head of Program and under the overall direction of the institute’s Executive Team.

Responsibilities

1. Conduct original research on China’s science, technology and innovation by collecting and analysing data, monitoring policies, and producing reports.
2. Support the team in producing cutting-edge analysis on China’s ambitions and progress in science, technology and innovation, with a strong focus on their implications for business, government and civil society actors in Europe and elsewhere in the world.
3. Contribute to regular publications on China’s science, technology and innovation.
4. Drive the delivery of external and internal projects and shape new research endeavours.
5. Serve as an expert commentator in the media and engage in public outreach through presentations, talks, social media and other outlets.
6. Participate in public events and engage in consultative meetings with policy makers, companies, knowledge institutions and other stakeholders.

Requirements

1. Strong academic background (at least BA; MA/MSc encouraged).
2. Native or near-native command of English and a strong knowledge of modern Chinese (minimally HSK 5 or equivalent).
3. A basic understanding of science, technology and innovation, or a willingness to obtain such an understanding.
4. Ability to work with large datasets (working knowledge of Excel required).
5. Experience working with Chinese primary sources.
6. Proven ability to conduct research and complete assignments of high quality.
7. High degree of flexibility and willingness to work as part of a team covering a wide scope of topics.

Desired skills

1. Good command of German.
2. Proven technical understanding of one or more technology areas or issues.
3. Experience with science communication.
4. Experience with coding and implementing data-driven research projects.
5. Interest in the Chinese military and security services.
6. Understanding of German and European China policy as it relates to science, technology and innovation.

MERICS offers a flexible and stimulating work environment in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary, and international team. The position will be based in Berlin, with a competitive salary (commensurate with experience and qualifications) and excellent benefits.

This is a full-time position. You will be hired initially on a two-year contract, with a probationary period of six months and a commitment to make your position permanent.
